
Saint Mary’s Ends Indiana Men’s Basketball Season in NCAA Tournament
Indiana Men’s Basketball season is over an 82-53 loss to Saint Mary’s in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament Thursday night in Portland, Oregon. The 12th seeded Hoosiers end the year at 21-14 while the 5th seeded Gales improve to 26-7, and will advance to the Second Round on Saturday night. Indiana was led by Trayce Jackson-Davis with 12 points and 6 rebounds, and Xavier Johnson added 11 points. Indiana was 18-53 from the field for 34%, 2-10 from downtown for 20%, and 15-18 from the free throw line for 83%.
St Mary’s was led by Logan Johnson with 20 points, Tommy Khuse added 19 points, Alex Ducas scored 13, and Matthias Tass scored 12 points. The Gales were 31-60 from the field for 51%, 10-21 from three-point range for 47%, and 10-15 from the free throw line for 66%. Saint Mary’s led 40-27 at half and outscored the Hoosiers 42-25 in the second half.
Indiana University Women’s Basketball to host Charlotte in NCAA Tournament
For the first time in school history Indiana Women’s Basketball will host an NCAA Tournament game Saturday afternoon when the 3rd seed Hoosiers take on the 14th seed Charlotte 49ers at 1:30pm in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers are making their eighth NCAA Tournament and third-consecutive appearance. IU holds a 6-7 record all-time and are most recently coming off an Elite Eight appearance in the 2021 NCAA Tournament. This will be the first time the women’s tournament will hold First and Second Round games inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The winner of Indiana vs. Charlotte will face off against the winner of #6 seed Kentucky and #11 seed Princeton, which will tip off at 4pm. The Winners play on Monday with time and tv to be announced after the completion of Saturday’s games.
Indiana advanced to the Big Ten Tournament championship game for the first time in 20 years last week as the #5 seed. Along the way, defeated Rutgers, Maryland, and top-seed Ohio State. Graduate Guard Nicole Cardaño-Hillary and Senior Guard Grace Berger each earned a spot on the All-Tournament Eeam. Berger earned a pair of All-American honors this week from the Associated Press and USBWA. She earned spots on the honorable mention teams and has now earned four All-American honors in her IU career.
Charlotte arrives as the 2022 C-USA regular season and tournament champions with a 22-9 overall record and 15-3 mark in conference play. Graduate Guard Octavia Jett-Wilson leads the way for the 49ers with 19.1 points per game. Graduate Forward Keke McKinney leads on the glass with 8.1 boards per game while redshirt Senior Guard Mikayla Boykin averages 13.3 points per game. They are #90 in the NET rankings and went 9-4 away from home. The two programs have met just once in the all-time series. Indiana won the lone meeting at the Junkaroo Jam in Bimini, Bahamas on Nov. 27, 2009, 72-61.
Xavier Beats Indiana Baseball 9-7
Xavier handed Indiana Baseball its first home loss of the season Thursday Night at Bart Kaufman Field winning 9-7. Xavier got nine hits, 7 RBI’s, two doubles and two home runs. Xavier batters were walked four times and struck out 10. Xavier committed 2 errors as Jared Gad got the win improving to 1-1 and Jerry Huntzinger got his first save of the season. Xavier improves to 6-12 on the season.
Indiana falls to 7-10 on the year. The Hoosiers got 6 hits, 6 RBIs, and a Home Run from Linton Product Josh Pyne. Indiana batters were walked 8 times and struck out 8 times, with two fielding errors. Reese Sharp takes the loss for the Hoosiers on the Mound falling to 0-4. Indiana and Xavier play at Noon on Saturday and play a Doubleheader starting at Noon on Sunday.
Bloomington North Boys Basketball Faces Cathedral for a Trip to The State Finals
The Bloomington North Cougars Boys Basketball Team is looking for its 3rd ever trip to the state finals when they take on Cathedral from Indianapolis in the Class 4A Semi State Championship game at Hatchet House in Washington Saturday afternoon at 3 pm. The Cougars are 24-3 and have won 17 in a row since a loss at Bedford North Lawrence in Late December. Bloomington North won the Semi State title in 1997 and 2000. This is Cougars first appearance in the Semi State since losing to Indianapolis Tech in 2014.
Cathedral is 24-6 on the season and have won seven in a row. The Irish is in the Semi State for the first time since 2013. Cathedral is looking for its 4th trip to the state finals after appearances in in 1992, 1998, and 2013. The Irish won the Class 3A State Championship in 1998. The winner of this game will face the winner of 4A Northern Semi State game between Chesterton and Kokomo in the State Finals at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis next Saturday night at 8:30 pm.
