
Former IU Men’s Basketball Player Maurice Creek signs with Medora Timber Jacks
Former Indiana University Men’s Basketball Player Maurice Creek is returning to the State of Indiana to play for the Medora Timber Jacks in the Basketball League. Creek played at Indiana University from 2990-2013 before playing one season at George Washington in 2013-2014. Creek has played overseas in The Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Finland, Israel, Romania, and Ukraine. Creek was stranded in Ukraine following the Russian invasion and was able to get across the border into Romania before heading back to the United States.
Creek has played in The Basketball Tournament during the summers for Sideline Cancer in 2018 and 2020. Sideline Cancer lost in the Championship to the Marquette Golden Eagles Alumni Team in 2020.
The Timber Jacks 4-8 on the season in the Lower Midwest Division of the Basketball League in the sixth and final spot. Creek joins the team for the final 12 games of the season. He will make his debut this Friday against the Kokomo Bobcats and Saturday against the Indiana All Americans at Blue River Valley HS near New Castle Indiana. The Timber Jacks return home April 29th and 30th at Medora High School in Medora Indiana. Medora is 3 miles south of U.S. 50 in southwestern Jackson County in between Bedford and Brownstown. Medora is small town of 350 but loves their basketball and this second season for the Timber Jacks who played in the four team now defunct Hoosier Hardwood Basketball Association last season.
Indiana University Diver Tarrin Gilliland named finalist for Honda Sport Award
Indiana sophomore diver and repeat NCAA platform national champion Tarrin Gilliland is one of four finalists for the Honda Sport Award, the Collegiate Women’s Sports Awards. The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 46 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies “the best of the best in collegiate athletics”. The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2022 Honda Cup which will be presented on a telecast on CBS Sports Network. The Honda Sport award winner for swimming & diving will be announced later this week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.
Gilliland is the first-ever Indiana diver to be nominated for the award. Swimmer Lilly King was a finalist in four straight seasons (2016-19) and became the fourth Hoosier to win the prestigious honor in 2019, joining Michelle Dekkers (Cross Country, 1988-89), Kim Betz (Cross Country, 1987-88) and Heather Crowe (Tennis, 1981-82). The 2022 CSCAA Diver of the Year won her second straight NCAA platform diving national title in March, making her just the second woman ever to win back-to-back platform titles as a freshman and sophomore, joining Stanford’s Eileen Richetelli (1992-93). At USA Diving Winter Nationals in December, Gilliland punched her ticket to the 2022 FINA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, in two events, winning both the mixed synchronized platform dive, with IU teammate Carson Tyler, and the women’s event with Arizona’s Delaney Schnell.
The CWSA, entering its 46th year, has honored the nation’s top NCAA women athletes for their superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. Since commencing its partnership in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.4 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women’s athletics programs.
Indiana Softball Loses to Notre Dame
The Indiana softball team battled back from a 4-3 deficit in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, but fell 8-5 to No. 22 Notre Dame on Tuesday at Andy Mohr Field. Notre Dame got on the board first with two runs in the second inning. In the bottom of the second inning the Hoosiers loaded the bases with one out. Brooke Benson was hit by a pitch and Cora Bassett hit a single to drive in two runs to put the Hoosiers up 3-2. Notre Dame scored one in the sixth and one in the seventh to take a 4-3 lead. In the seventh inning Edgewood Grad Taylor Minnick singled and Brianna Copeland walked. Grayson Radcliffe singled to score Juvia Davis who came in to pinch run as the Hoosiers tied the game 4-4. The Hoosiers had runners on second and third with one out, but could not push across the winning run as the game moved to the eighth inning. Notre Dame scored four runs in the eighth to take an 8-5 lead. Aaliyah Andrews and Brooke Benson doubled in the eighth to bring the Hoosiers within three at 8-5.
Indiana drops to 23-13 overall and 6-6 in the Big Ten this season. The Hoosiers tallied 10 hits facing three different Notre Dame pitchers. Heather Johnson pitched 7.2 innings for the Hoosiers. Grayson Radcliffe went 3-for-4 and Brooke Benson also had a multi-hit game as she went 2-for-3. Cora Bassett recorded two RBI in the game as Taylor Minnick and Tatum Hayes stole bases for Indiana.
The Hoosiers host Louisiana this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at Andy Mohr Field in the first ever meeting between the two teams. Louisiana is 29-10 on the season and 15-3 in conference games. The Ragin’ Cajuns are hitting .354 on the season with a 2.31 team era.
Indiana Baseball Falls at Miami Ohio
The Indiana Baseball team lost to Miami Ohio 9-7 Tuesday evening in Oxford as they fall to 13-22 on the season. The Hoosiers scored 3 runs in the top of the first inning before the Red Hawks scored seven in the bottom of the first. Indiana would score 2 runs in the top of the third to make it 7-5 but Red Hawks scored two more in the bottom of the 4th to make 9-5. Indiana would add a run in the top of 5th and the top of 8th innings. The Hoosiers had 10 Hits with 7 RBI’s and 5 walks. The Hoosiers were struck out 9 times and left 8 on base.
Miami Ohio improves to 15-21 on this season. The Red Hawks had 9 hits, 8 RBI’s, were walked 4 times, struck out 5 times and left 11 on base. Indiana leads the series 42-38 and 14-12 in the last 26 meetings. The teams split the season series 1-1 with each team winning on their home field.
Indiana will be back in action tonight when they play at Cincinnati starting at 6 pm.Cincinnati is 16-18 overall on the season and 6-3 in American Athletic Conference play. Paul Komistek and Joe Powell are each hitting a team-best .370 on the season, while Griffin Merritt has hit 13 home runs and driven in 38 RBIs to lead the team in both. The pitching staff is limiting opponents to a .288 batting average but have hit 52 batters to go along with 173 walks for a .402 on-base percentage against. Indiana owns an all-time mark of 21-12 against Cincinnati in a series that began in 1900. The two teams met just 21 times between 1900-2008 but have met 12 times since the 2009 season. IU owns the longest winning streak in the series at four games from 1997-98, while UC has won consecutive games just once (2015-16).

Indians Fall to Columbus 6-4
The Indianapolis Indians lost to the Columbus Clippers 6-4 at Victory Field Tuesday evening in Indianapolis. The Indians are 6-6 and have lost four in a row. Columbus is 10-3 on the season as the Clippers had 8 hits and two errors in the game. The Indians just had 4 hits and the same two teams will meet this afternoon at 1:35 pm.
The Indians Parent Club the Pittsburgh Pirates announced that the rehab assignments of left-handed pitcher Sam Howard and outfielder Anthony Alford have been transferred from Single-A Bradenton to Indianapolis. Howard, 29, opened the season on the 10-day injured list with a mid-back muscle sprain. He tossed 1.0 inning on April 15 in a rehab start with Bradenton and surrendered one walk with two strikeouts. The Cartersville, Ga. native spent most of the 2021 season with Pittsburgh, went 3-4 with a 5.60 ERA (28er/45.0ip), and 60 strikeouts in 54 games (one start). He made four rehab appearances (one start) with Indianapolis last year and did not allow an earned run in 4.2 innings. Howard was selected by Colorado in the third round (82nd overall) of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft. He was claimed off waivers by Pittsburgh on Oct. 30, 2019.
Alford, 27, opened the season on the 10-day injured list with a right wrist sprain. He hit safely in both of his rehab appearances with Bradenton, going 3-for-7 with a double, home run and three runs scored from April 16-17.
