Arrests made for those illegally purchasing used catalytic converters
Johnson County Law Enforcement Officers have begun investigating and arresting businesses and individuals suspected of illegally purchasing stolen catalytic converters. Officials believe that these arrests will set a tone, making it more difficult for those stealing the expensive car parts, to unload them.
A year ago, Authorities provided notice to area businesses that deal in Catalytic Converters, ensuring they were aware of recent changes to the law. Subsequently, a 4 month-long sting operation had undercover Officers bringing catalytic converters to businesses and documenting the cases in which the businesses purchased the valuable automobile parts without the legally required paperwork.
32 year-old Ashley Browning, 62 year-old William Burton, 36 year-old Glen Johnson all from Edinburgh, 31 year-old Latona Bryant of and 57 year-old Tammy Hill of Trafalgar have all been arrested for allegedly buying catalytic converters illegally. Under Indiana Code, catalytic converters can only be purchased from individuals who have proper documentation to prove they own the vehicle the catalytic converter came from, a level 6 felony.
