
Indiana University Women’s Soccer adds transfer Shea O’Malley
Indiana University Women’s Soccer Head Coach Erwin van Bennekom has announced the addition of Shea O’Malley, a transfer from Ole Miss. O’Malley, a native of Cary, N.C., played in seven matches during her freshman year in 2021. She logged 56 minutes and had one shot.
O’Malley, a defender/midfielder, was ranked the #25 recruit in the nation by TopDrawerSoccer. She was called up to the United States U17 Women’s National Team and made six starts with the U17 WNT in friedlies and tournaments in 2019 and 2020. She competed in the International Friendly Tournament, facing off against Spain, Germany and Sweden. O’Malley played for the NC Courage Academy club program and helped the team qualify for the Girls Development Academy playoffs every year. They were the 2016 Southern Regional Premier League Champions.
“We are very excited to welcome Shea to our program,” van Bennekom said in Press Release. “She will add technical quality and a high understanding of the game that falls in line with how we want to play. Shea is versatile and will be able to play a variety of positions for us.”
Indiana University Baseball Player and Linton native Kip Fougerousse announces he Is transferring
Indiana University Baseball player and Linton HS Graduate Kip Fougerousse announced Tuesday that he is transferring from the program. The 6-3 right hander played in 45 games and started 36 in his two years in Bloomington. Fougerousse played in just 13 games this season after he was injured most of the year with a facial fracture. In total he 142 At Bats, 27 Hits, 16 Runs, 3 Home Runs, 22 RBI’s, 3 doubles, and a triple. He had ,190 batting average was walked 7 times and hit by a pitch twice. He was a catcher and infielder for the Hoosiers.
His teammate at Linton is fellow Hoosier Josh Pyne who was named to the all-big ten freshman team this season. In High School Linton played Edgewood at Bart Kaufman Field on May 20, 2019, with current Hoosier players Ethan Vecrumba and Luke Hayden playing for the Mustangs as Edgewood won that game 8-5.
Indiana Fever Guard Kelsey Mitchell named WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week
Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell was named the WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon. This marks the first time in Mitchell’s career that she earned Eastern Conference Player of the Week honors and also the first Fever player since Tamika Catchings won the award on July 5, 2015.
During the week of May 23-29, Mitchell averaged 23.5 points and 2.0 steals per game, while shooting 53.3 percent from the floor and finishing 10-of-11 from the free throw line. On Tuesday against the Chicago Sky, Mitchell finished with 25 points, scoring 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting, and 4-of-4 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter alone. In Friday’s 101-96 win against the Los Angeles Sparks, Mitchell passed Briann January for third all-time in franchise history for most made field goals, trailing only Catchings (2,385) and Katie Douglas (899) with the most ever made in a Fever jersey. Mitchell’s team-high 22 points was the 40th game of her career scoring at least 20 points. Through 10 games this season, Mitchell is second in the WNBA in points per game (19.0), second in made field goals (67) and tied for third in most made 3-point field goals (22).
The Indiana Fever announced Monday afternoon that the team has waived forward Alanna Smith. In nine games this season Smith started one game and averaged 4.3 points and 2.7 rebounds in 12.9 minutes per game. Smith was drafted with 8th overall pick by the Phoenix Mercury in the 2019 WNBA Draft. Smith played for Phoenix from 2019-2021 before coming to Indiana in the off season. The Stanford Grad and Australian native has played in 64 career games scoring 195 points, pulling down 152 rebounds, dishing out 42 assists, 25 steals, and blocking 32 shots.
Edgewood and Bloomington South Baseball fall in Sectional Championship
The Edgewood Mustangs and Bloomington South Panthers came up short in their respective sectional championship baseball game on Monday and both ended the season on their home fields.
West Vigo beat Edgewood 4-3 in the Class 3A Title game in Ellettsville. West Vigo ran the safety squeeze as Ben Kearns put down the bunt and brought in Nick Lindsey from third to walk it off to win its first sectional title since 2018 and 15th overall. Edgewood’s Connor Thummel picked up the ball and flipped it to catcher Brayden Ault, but it slipped out of his glove for the dramatic finish. Edgewood finishes the season at 17-12 and were looking for back-to-back sectional titles. West Vigo advances to the Regional Semifinal at Danville on Saturday morning facing Brebeuf Jesuit at 10 am with Lebanon and Beech Grove squaring off at noon with the championship game scheduled for 7 pm that evening.
Columbus East beat Bloomington South 6-5 in 8 innings in Class 4A Title game on the Southside of Bloomington. Bloomington South ends the year at 14-13 and were looking for their first sectional title since 2016. Columbus East jumped out to 2-1 lead after the 1st inning. The Olympians added two runs in the top of the fifth and one in the top of the sixth to make 5-1 going to the bottom of the sixth when the panthers scored one run to make 5-2. Down to their last chance Bloomington South scored 3 runs to tie it 5-5 and force extras. Columbus East scored the winning run the top of the eighth inning and a double play ended the game that gives Columbus East its first sectional title since 2019 and its 20th overall. The Olympians 13-16 will advance to the Jasper Regional Semifinal on Saturday to face Mooresville at 1pm. Jasper and New Albany will face off at 11am with the championship game scheduled for 7pm that evening.
