Bloomington man arrested after firing multiple gunshots early Saturday
by Jeremy Hogan
Police arrested the driver and passenger of a vehicle after a pursuit early Saturday morning in Bloomington, according to Bloomington Police Department Captain Ryan Pedigo. The passenger had fired shots in two locations before the pursuit.
Police were called around 1:07 am. Saturday morning after a report of a gunshot fired outside Steve’s Place.
A 19-year-old Spencer woman was at the pool hall with her 27-year-old boyfriend. When the couple left, the man backed a white Kia Sportage into a sign outside the business, then revved up the engine, displayed a silver handgun outside the window of the vehicle, and fired one round. The man drove off heading eastbound on West Third Street.
A police officer located a vehicle matching the description heading westbound, but a woman was driving. The vehicle turned onto Interstate 69 and began traveling northbound.
As the officer was running the plate to find out who owned the vehicle a person pointed a black handgun out of the passenger side and fired 6-7 shots. The officer could see the muzzle blast from the weapon. The officer then activated emergency lights to make a traffic stop, but the vehicle failed to stop.
The vehicle continued eastbound onto the 45/46 bypass, and almost clipped another vehicle while passing on the right. Finally, before the vehicle could enter a residential area, police used a pit maneuver to stop it near the intersection of the bypass and North Walnut Street.
The driver and her boyfriend were arrested. A passenger in the vehicle, a third person, was not detained.
Police found a scuffed up 9mm handgun, which was thrown from the vehicle not far from the traffic stop.
The 27-year-old man is facing the following charges: criminal recklessness, a level 6 felony; and handgun without a license, class A misdemeanor. The woman is being charged with resisting law enforcement.
