Hoosiers advised to use caution to avoid scams while on summer vacation
Attorney General Todd Rokita encourages Hoosiers to avoid scams by being mindful as they prepare for out-of-town summer vacations. To ensure your time away is as safe as possible, use caution to avoid crafty scammers. Attorney General Rokita shared the following list of tips to avoid common vacation scams:

  • Avoid high-pressure sales pitches before you book a trip.
  • Be extra cautious when booking through an unfamiliar company. Check the Better Business Bureau ratings and research the name online to see if there are any allegations of scams.
  • Read the fine print in the contract before you sign it. It will tell you about the conditions under which the operator can change or cancel the trip and the rules and penalties for cancellation.
  • Pay by credit card. It gives you more protection than cash or checks.
  • Use good judgment when sharing about your trip on social media. Consider changing your online privacy settings while on your trip.
  • Lock your valuables, including personal information, in your trunk or hotel safe.

If you believe you have been the victim of a vacation scam, file a complaint at www.indianaconsumer.com with Attorney General Rokita’s office.

Job Fair today for displaced Walmart employees
Indiana’s WorkOne is hosting a job fair today for Walmart workers who lost their jobs on March 17th when the Walmart Fulfillment Center in Plainfield burned down. The following employers are expected: Amazon, Becton Dickinson (BD), Craftmark Bakery, DHL Supply, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Epson, Fastenal, FedEx Ground, GEODIS, GXO, Harlan Bakeries, IDS, Inktel, International Paper, IU Health, Kirby Risk, MD Logistics, NAPA, Nice-Pak, Radial, RT Moore, Siemens Healthineers, TOA, and Ulta D.C.

IU Student Mental Health Initiative task forces share recommendations (Release by Amanda Roach)
The Indiana University Student Mental Health Initiative continues moving forward, with plans for a number of task force recommendations to be in place by the fall semester. Since the February announcement of the university-wide initiative and creation of the related mental health resources website, the three task forces have met a number of times to develop ideas and strategies for fulfilling their individual charges.

Each of the three task forces — Culture and Climate, Services and Support, and Policies and Protocols — developed a series of recommendations for its area of focus. The groups will work to get as many components as possible up and running for the fall semester. The task force recommendations account for both ensuring students know how to access all of the resources on their campus — including 1:1 counseling and the many peer-to-peer resources available — as well as understanding what to do in a crisis.

  • The Culture and Climate Task Force is recommending a number of actions, including making IU a safe and stigma-free zone, integrating mental health topics into student organizations, and educating students, faculty, and staff on how to respond to a mental health crisis or incident.
  • The Services and Support Task Force recommendations include ensuring accountability for following through with the strategic plan, increasing the number of mental health professionals available to students, faculty, and staff, and determining the best way to help the most at-risk students.
  • The Policies and Protocols Task Force focused on recommendations that would expand the university’s “infrastructure of care,” better support all students and remove barriers to accessing care.

This Week in Hoosier History

Wright

1910 – The nation’s first licensed aviation meet was held at the Motor Speedway. Planes and their operators came from all around the country to compete in various speed, altitude, and endurance events. Orville and Wilbur Wright were there with their team of six planes.  During the week, one of their pilots, Walter Brookins, set a new altitude record of 4384.5 feet.  Newspapers called the pilots “air wizards.”
