Indy Eleven split Women’s and Men’s Soccer doubleheader with Detroit City FC
The Indy Eleven Women’s Team beat Detroit City FC 3-0 in front of 3,092 fans at IUPUI Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Saturday afternoon in historic Women’s and Men’s Soccer Doubleheader. The Indy Eleven Men’s Team lost 1-0 in the nightcap the boys from the Motor City. The Indy Eleven Women’s Team finishes the Regular Season unbeaten in its first season of existence with a 10-0-2 record along with the Great Lakes Division Championship. The team will play this Wednesday in Quarterfinal Match, time and location of the match has not been announced. The Men lost 1-0 in front of a season high 9,642 fans. The Boys in Blue are 6-9-3 with 18 points on the season and have lost three in a row.

Forward Maddy Williams came into the match with a team-high 10 goals, and she had an early chance for an eleventh but had her line drive ricochet off of a Detroit defender in the second minute. Chester’s sliding shot in the fourth minute almost put Indy on the scoreboard, but Detroit City goalkeeper Deighton Wamer had the diving save, her first of four in the opening seven minutes. However, she could only stop the Girls in Blue for so long, as Soderstrom matched Williams with her tenth goal of the year in the 25th minute after collecting a pass from defender Jenna Chatterton that she was able to carry inside area and finish through the legs of Wamer. The Girls in Blue had additional opportunities in the final 10 minutes of the half through Williams and Chatterton, but Wamer was on the spot again to ensure the half ended with Detroit down just 1-0.   Halftime substitute forward Milica Bulatovic had two scoring opportunities inside the area for Indy in the 60th minute, but just after her second effort was blocked Chester collected and slipped a shot through three Detroit City defenders inside the six to score the Eleven’s second. The celebration carried on two minutes later as Soderstrom’s penalty shot, created when Karsyn Cherry was tackled down inside the area, went inside the right post, giving her a brace and the team’s solo scoring lead on 11 tallies – and Indiana’s Team a three-nil lead. Indiana’s Team saw out the rest of the game to earn the joint clean sheet between starter Mackenzie Wood substitute Kate Phillips, capping off their inaugural regular season in the W League with an undefeated record, a season-high five-game winning streak and a dominant +24 goal differential in their 12 contests.

In the Men’s Game Detroit had its foot on the gas from the onset, and it paid off just five minutes in through Connor Rutz, whose header of Deklan Wynne’s cross to the six nestled into the upper right corner to move the scoreboard for the visitors. Rutz went searching for a second in the 11th minute on a volley that just missed the crossbar, and Eleven goalkeeper Tim Trilk did well to adjust to Rhys Williams’ deflected shot from the top of the area in the 24th, going low to steer around his right post. Indy started to find more of the ball as the half progressed, although its looks were limited to Ayoze’s blocked shot in the 39th minute and a pair of Nicky Law shots that were sent into Detroit’s wall from 25 yards out in the 43rd minute. The lack of shots was clearly an emphasis coming out of the locker room for Indy Eleven, as Solomon Asante and Neveal Hackshaw both uncorked efforts from distance within the opening 30 seconds of the stanza, but neither challenged DCFC ‘keeper Nathan Steinwascher. Another wide effort by Asante and another blocked shot from Law around the hour mark kept Indy threatening. Rutz hunted his brace again with a turn-and-fire from the penalty spot in the 64th minute, but Trilk was on the spot and did well not to spill, and the Eleven ‘keeper guarded his near post well in the 76th minute when Pato Botello Faz fired on frame. Detroit did well to clog its defensive third across the final half hour, with substitute forward Aris Briggs’ 89th minute header the only shot the Boys in Blue could muster down the stretch. The result pushed Indy’s losing streak to four games, and its goalless streak to 360 minutes. Indy Eleven will take to the road in search of success next Friday, July 15, when it travels east to take on New York Red Bulls II one final time in USL Championship play at 7:00 pm live on ESPN+. Then the Boys in Blue return home on Saturday, July 23, for the first of three straight home Saturday affairs against Memphis 901 FC.

Carter Bins began the scoring with his second home run of the series and fifth this season, a solo shot for Indy’s only hit off I-Cubs (37-46) starter Javier Assad (L, 0-1). A passed ball in the bottom of the fourth then tacked on an insurance run for the Indians. Indianapolis and Iowa tied with three hits apiece in the contest.
