Indiana University Women’s Soccer opens regular season at West Virginia
Indiana Women’s Soccer will open the program’s 30th season with a clash against West Virginia this evening in Morgantown, West Virginia. First kick between the Hoosiers and Mountaineers is scheduled for 7pm and the match will be streamed on the Big 12 Now on ESPN+ with Andrew Caridi (PxP) and Adam Zundell (Analyst) on the call. Live stats of the match can be tracked on IUHoosiers.com. The West Virginia Mountaineers, led by veteran head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown, finished the 2021 season with a record of 10-5-5 (3-3-3 Big 12). The program was left out of the NCAA Tournament field for the first time in 21 seasons, a run that marked the fourth-longest active tournament streak in the NCAA at the time. Sophomore forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran returns for her second season after being named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team. She is one of three returners to record nine points last season (3 goals, 3 assists) and led the team in both shots (45) and shots on goal (25). Senior forward Julianne Vallerand has scored 12 career goals in her first three seasons in Morgantown. Senior goalkeeper Kayza Massey played in and started all 20 games last season for the Mountaineers in goal. She conceded 12 goals (0.58 goals against average) while making 52 saves (8.813 save percentage). Massey allowed one or fewer goals in 17-of-20 starts and was named All-Big 12 Second Team.

The Hoosiers were 9-5-4 last season and 3-4-3 in the Big Ten and missed out on the Big Ten Tournament finishing in 9th place. The Hoosiers had three players named to the 2022 Big Ten Women’s Soccer Players to Watch List with sophomore keeper Jamie Gerstenberg, sophomore forward Jordyn Levy and freshman defender Arianna Rose among the 42 players recognized by the conference’s coaches.

Gerstenberg, a member of the 2021 Big Ten All-Freshman Team, tied the Indiana program record with nine shutouts in her rookie campaign. She posted a 9-3-4 record across 1,456 minutes in 16 starts. The Birkenwerder, Germany, native recorded 36 saves in 44 chances (0.818 save percentage) and allowed just 0.49 goals per game. Levy tied for second on the team in goals scored (4) in ’21, tied for fourth in assists (2) and third in total points (10) among Hoosier attackers. Three of her four goals were game-winning tallies, the highest mark on the team. Rose joined the IU women’s soccer program after spending three seasons with the Canadian youth program. She hails from Brampton, Ontario, Canada and competed for Ontario’s National Development Center.

Indiana and West Virginia have never met on the pitch. The Mountaineers are the only opponent on the schedule that the Hoosiers have not previously played. The Hoosiers are unbeaten in six previous matches against current teams from the Big XII Conference with a record of 4-0-2. Indiana is slated to play seven teams that are ranked or receiving votes in the preseason United Soccer Coaches rankings, highlighted by a couple of top-10 Big Ten opponents in No. 6 Rutgers and No. 9 Michigan. Penn State (No. 14), Purdue (RV) and Wisconsin (RV) round out the five conference opponents the Hoosiers will face on the pitch that are receiving votes in the season-opening poll.

Indians Get 1,000th Career Win at Victory Field

Hoy Park and Travis Swaggerty each recorded three-hit performances while falling a triple short of the cycle, and the Indianapolis Indians peppered seven extra-base hits as part of a 15-hit attack en route to a 10-5 triumph over the Iowa Cubs on Wednesday afternoon. The victory was the organization’s 1,000th win all time at Victory Field. Indianapolis (55-56) led wire-to-wire and scored in each of its first seven innings. In the opening frame, Park singled and raced to third on a one-out double by Swaggerty. Then with two outs, Brendt Citta reached on an infield single deep in the hole between first and second base to drive in two runs.

The Indians pushed their lead to 3-0 in the second on a two-out RBI double by Park. After David Bote put Iowa (51-62) on the scoreboard with a run-scoring single in the third, doubles by Cal Mitchell and Citta in the home half extended the lead back to three. Indy’s scoring barrage continued in the middle innings. Drew Maggi doubled to open the fourth and later scored on a single by Swaggerty. In the fifth, singles by Jack Suwinski and Mason Martin set up a run-scoring fielder’s choice off the bat of Taylor Davis and a sacrifice fly by Park. The Indians then played long ball in the sixth and seventh, with Swaggerty and Park ripping solo home runs to push Indy to double digits in the run column for an eighth time this season. Osvaldo Bido (W, 2-7) sailed through 5.0 innings of one-run ball, scattering four hits, one walk and one hit batter with four strikeouts. Caleb Kilian (L, 4-2) was tagged for six earned runs on eight hits in 3.0-plus innings pitched. Both of Kilian’s losses in Triple-A this year have occurred at Victory Field (also: July 8).

Nick Mears, John O’Reilly and Travis MacGregor posted zeroes in the sixth, seventh, and eighth out of Indy’s bullpen before Iowa chased Hunter Stratton for four runs in the ninth to complete the scoring. Indianapolis reached the 15-hit threshold for a seventh time overall in 2022 and the second at Victory Field (also: June 11 vs. Columbus). The Indians and I-Cubs play the third contest of their six-game series tonight at 7:05pm. Indy will send RHP Jerad Eickhoff (5-4, 4.39) to the bump against RHP Javier Assad (0-2, 3.52).
