Fans get first look at Indiana University Women’s and Men’s Basketball Teams during Hoosier Hysteria
Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall was the place to be Friday night as 10,000 fans attended Hoosier Hysteria to get their first chance to see the 2022-23 Indiana University Women’s and Men’s Basketball Teams as college basketball season kicks off. IU Graduates Courtney Cornin and Rhett Lewis were co-emcees for the event. Cronin who works as a reporter for ESPN talked about her favorite memory, which was being in Assembly Hall on December 10, 2011, Christian Watford hitting a buzzer beating three-pointer to beat #1 Kentucky. Lewis who played football for the Hoosiers and is now an analyst for the IU Radio Network talked about the 2002 Sweet 16 win over Duke when he was here playing Football. Lewis reminded the crowd that in 49 states it’s just basketball, but this is Indiana. The cheerleaders got the fans fired up with cheers and the William Tell Overture which is the under eight-minute timeout, considered the greatest timeout in college basketball.
Both Women’s and Men’s Teams were introduced and came out throwing out T-Shirts to the crowd and showing off some dance moves. Head Coaches Teri Moren arrived in a vintage Bonneville, and Mike Woodson came out in the back of a Cadillac. Moren wearing a Taiwan Mullen Jersey and her Entrance Song was “Paper in Fire” by Seymour Indiana native John Mellencamp which is Coach Moren’s hometown. Woodson wore the Men’s Basketball traditional warmup outfit with the Script Indiana on the Back and the candy stripe pants like he did as player. Both coaches talked to Courney Cornin and thank the fans for coming out and out excited they are for this season. Woodson got the biggest reaction when he said “Indiana basketball is, excuse my language, the shit,”. With Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff Show in town for Indiana-Michigan Football Game. Former USC Football Players Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart along with former Notre Dame Quarterback Brady Quinn were on the floor talking to Rhett Lewis throwing t-Shirts and Footballs into the Crowd. Lewis asked Bush if he could play some hoops and Bush smiled and then all three started shooting three pointers and Bush hit three in a row. Freshman Malik Reneau was given a football that he tossed halfway up the lower level of the stands.
After introductions, the evening moved to a 3-point competition. The men’s and women’s teams paired up to make as many 3-pointers as possible in an around-the-world fashion. Here were the first-round scores led by Chloe Moore-McNeil (18) and Miller Kopp (14) = 32, Sara Scalia (15) and Xavier Johnson (12) = 27 advance to the finals. Sydney Parrish (14) and CJ Gunn (11) = 25 and Tamar Bates (13) and Yarden Garzon (8) = 21 were eliminated. In the final round Moore-McNeil and Kopp won the competition with a combined score of 28 to 27 for Scalia and Johnson. The skills competition featured a relay of a mid-range baseline jumper, a free throw, a wing 3-pointer, and a half-court shot. Teams of three were timed to make all shots in that respective order. Mackenzie Holmes and Race Thompson along with former IU Men’s Player Collin Hartman won the competition in 24.0 seconds. Jalen Hood-Schifino and Alyssa Geary along with former IU Men’s Player Derek Elston finished in second place with time of 30.3 seconds. Jalen Hood-Schifino, Trayce Jackson Davis, Xavier Johnson, Malik Reneau, Trey Galloway and Logan Duncomb all scored 2 points. Miller Kopp, Race Thompson, CJ Gunn, Kaleb Banks and Michael Shipp did not score. Anthony Leal did not play and was wearing a boot on his right foot. Walk On’s Nathan Childress, Shaan Burke and Hogan Orbaugh did not play in the scrimmage. The evening wrapped up with a concert by Chicago Rap Artist G-Herbo.
Indiana University Football loses Homecoming game to Michigan 31-10
Indiana University Football Lost to the fourth ranked Michigan Wolverines 31-10 Saturday Afternoon at Memorial Stadium. The Hoosiers are 3-3 on the season and 1-2 in the Big Ten with Maryland coming into Memorial Stadium this Saturday at 3:30pm. The Hoosiers have lost three in row and 45-58-6 all time in homecoming games. The Hoosiers had several players out due to injury including linebacker Cam Jones, Tight Ends A.J. Barner and James Bomba, Wide Receivers DJ Matthews Jr and Javon Swinton along with Cornerback Jaylin Williams. The Hoosiers and Michigan were tied 10-10 going into halftime but Michigan outscored Indiana 21-0 in second half and improved to 6-0 and 3-0 in the Big Ten and leads the all-time series with Hoosiers 61-10.
After the Hoosiers scored to make 7-7 in the first quarter Michigan running backs coach Mike Hart collapsed near midfield. He was carted off the field and taken to a hospital. Both teams took a knee while medical personnel attended him. Hart, who previously was IU’s running backs coach, was alert as he left the field. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said Hart had a “medical emergency” and was in stable condition. “He’ll stay overnight in Bloomington to continue observation. Mike’s a strong guy. Prayers go his way. It puts things in perspective.” Added IU Head Football Coach Tom Allen: “Prayers for Mike and his family. I’m very close with Mike. It sounds like he’s going to be okay, but a concern when he went down. Prayers for his family Our thoughts are for them. We’re praying for a full recovery.”
Michigan opened the game going against tape by throwing on its first three plays to reach midfield, then unleased tailback Blake Corum, who had runs of 51 and one yard for a touchdown and a 7-0 Wolverine lead less than three minute into the game.
IU responded by forcing a Michigan punt, then driving 76 yards on 10 plays for the tying touchdown. Connor Bazelak hit Cam Camper with a 33-yard completion and then Josh Henderson for the 11-yard TD throw. The Wolverines regained the lead at 10-7 on a 44-yard field goal near the end of the first quarter. An apparent Bazelak-to-Aaron Steinfeldt TD pass was wiped out by an offensive pass interference call. Charles Campbell then hit a 41-yard field goal to tie the score at 10-10 three minutes into the second quarter.
The tie remained when defensive end James Head Jr. blocked a Michigan field goal attempt, and then when the Wolverines blocked a Campbell field goal attempt. Halftime arrived with that 10-10 score. Michigan drove 98 yards for a touchdown and a 17-10 lead midway through the third quarter. It added a pair of TD passes in the fourth quarter.
Relentless pressure on Connor Bazelak crippled the offense. Without blitzing, Michigan sacked him seven times, and pressured him often on his 49 pass attempts. He managed 25 completions for 203 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. “It starts up front,” Allen said. “We have to protect the quarterback. We’re not getting the job done there.” On defense Linebacker Aaron Casey switched to Jones’ position and backup Bradley Jennings Jr. moved into the starting line. Bradley finished with 13 tackles. Casey had seven. “Bradley stepped up,” Allen said. “This is a great chance for him to grow and learn.” Losing Jones, who Allen said was playing at an All-America level, was a big blow. Allen said Jones was hurt in the Nebraska game and will be out several weeks. “You hate to lose your best player. He’s the leader of the defense. He’s playing at a high level. He’s a special player. We have to adjust and figure it out.”
