Indiana University Men’s Soccer gets program win #800
History was made Friday Night on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium as the 16th ranked Indiana Hoosiers Men’s Soccer Team defeated the 25th ranked Penn State Nittany Lions 4-2 to get the program’s 800th all time win in its 50th season as varsity program. Indiana is the seventh Men’s program in Men’s College Soccer to accomplish that feat but the they are the first program to get to 800 wins in 50 seasons.  The Hoosiers are one of the most storied programs in all of college soccer with 8 National Championships, 17 College Cup’s, 31 Straight NCAA Tournament Appearances, 46 NCAA Tournament Appearances, 17 Big Ten Regular Season Titles and 15 Big Ten Tournament Titles.  “It’s special anytime you can be a part of history here”, Ryan Wittenbrink said after the match. “Obviously, there is a deep history and culture that’s really special. So anytime we can keep progressing that forward and keep it going, it’s pretty cool for coach, the alumni and the fans.”  Indiana is 800-191-109 all time and their 77 percent winning percentage makes them the winningest program in NCAA Division 1 Men’s Soccer History.

The Hoosiers are 6-2-4 on the season and 2-1-3 in the Big 10 while Penn State falls to 5-6-3 and 2-1-2 in the Big Ten. Maryland and Wisconsin tied 2-2 in College Park Friday Night and the Hoosiers have two more Big Ten Regular season games tonight at Wisconsin and October 30 at home with Maryland as the race to the Big Ten regular season title comes down to the final games. “Obviously, the math I haven’t looked at it, but I’m sure it’s all jumbled up around right now” Head Coach Todd Yeagley Said after the match. “We got to get points in every game and let the table play out” Yeagley Said.  IU remains unbeaten at home this season going to 5-0-2 on the season and has a 16 Game home match unbeaten streak going back to last season and secured the teams 350th all-time win at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers lead the all-time series 34-15-5 with Penn State.

The Hoosiers got on the board first as Joey Maher scored at 4:47 mark with the assist to Ryan Whittenbrink. Liam Butts got the equalizer for Penn State when he found the bottom right left corner at the 17:39 mark on the assist to Seth Kuhn. Indiana retook the lead at the 19:57 mark when Brett Bebej found the bottom center of the goal with the assist to Nyk Sessock and Daniel Munie and the Hoosiers went to the locker room up 2-1.  

In the Second Half Indiana went up 3-1 when Ryan Whittenbrink scored his team leading 6th goal of the season on a penalty kick when got it passed Penn State goalkeeper Kris Shakes to the bottom right of goal. The first of four yellow cards came when Shakes was booked for time wasting, Ben Liscum got a yellow card at the 53;59 mark and then the Hoosiers got two yellow cards by Jack Waggoner at the 57:59 mark and Samuel Sarver at the 59:41 mark. Herbert Endeley scored the fourth goal for the Hoosiers at the 63:43 mark with Wittenbrink getting his second assist of the night. Penn State got one back when Peter Mangione scored on a penalty kick to the bottom right of goal past Indiana Goalkeeper Bryant Pratt at the 71:23 mark. Indiana went down to 10 men with just over five minutes left when Jack Waggoner got his second yellow and meant an automatic red card and sent off at the 83:47 mark but the Hoosiers were able to hold off the Penn State attack to get a big win and stay in the race for the Big Ten regular season title. “When you mathematically have a chance, its obviously fun for the group” Yeagley Said.  

Indiana University Football falls to Maryland 38-33
The Indiana University Football team lost a close one at Memorial Stadium Saturday Afternoon falling 38-33 to the Maryland Terrapins. The Hoosiers are 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the Big Ten and the path to bowl eligibility will get a lot tougher with five games left and needing three of those games to get to the six-win mark on the season and become bowl eligible. Maryland improves to 5-2 on the season and 2-2 in the Big Ten. This is the first time since 2016 that Maryland has started 5-2 and needs one more win to become bowl eligible. Indiana leads the all-time series 7-4 and Maryland got its second win in Bloomington in six tries.

On the first play from scrimmage Indiana quarterback Connor Bazelak threw an interception and Maryland used a short field and found end zone in just 4 plays with quarterback Taulia Tagovaolia scoring to take a 7-0 lead. Charles Campbell connected on a 38-yard field goal to make it 7-3. Tagovaolia threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-3 but the Hoosier responded with a 44-yard touchdown pass Bazelak to Josh Henderson to make it 14-10 with 10 minutes to go before halftime. The Hoosiers were able score with 1:47 left before halftime when Bazelak found Cam Camper on a 3-yard score to make it 17-14 going into the locker room. Camper felt like the Hoosiers should have won this game. “It was in our control” Camper Said after the game. “It hits a little harder. “We practice so hard. We had a good week”. He paused and said “It’s Football. It happens. We’ll shake Back”.

In the second half Maryland scored a touchdown and field goal as Bazelak threw his second interception of the game to set up the Maryland Field Goal to make it 24-17. The Hoosiers cut the lead down to three with Charles Campbell hitting his second field goal. Indiana took the lead when Josh Henderson scored on a 2-yard touchdown run to make 27-24. In the early stages of the fourth quarter Taulia Tagovaolia was taken down and holding his leg he was carted off the field and did not return. Backup Billy Edwards Jr came in and ran the ball five times for 53 yards and a touchdown. Edwards Jr was 0-3 passing but he directed two run only drives of 61 and 62 yards. With Maryland leading 31-27 the Hoosiers had great field position when Jaylyn Lucas returned the kickoff 43 yards to midfield. Andison Coby fumbled the ball after catching a Bazelak pass and Maryland recovered and that led to Edwards Jr touchdown run to make 38-27. Bazelak found Bloomington North Grad Aaron Steinfeldt on a 3-yard touchdown pass in the final minute but the Hoosiers could not get the top point conversion. Maryland recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock. “It’s Just having about having a finishing mentality” Head Coach Tom Allen said after the game. “We were in a position to do that. That’s what makes it really disappointing”.  

Bazelak was 29-42 for 292 yards 3 touchdowns and two interceptions. Bazelak caught a 23-yard pass from Donvaen McCulley on a trick play. Bazelak was sacked 3 times and the Hoosiers have allowed 22 sacks on the season. The Indiana running game struggled with 32 carries for 74 yards and on the season the Hoosiers have ran the ball 215 times for 619 yards and eight touchdowns. Tagovailoa was 25-39 for 270 yards and 3 touchdown passes. He was sacked twice and did not throw an interception. Roman Hemby had 17 carries for 107 yards and a touchdown. The Hoosiers will travel to Rutgers this Saturday at Noon and it will be televised on Big Ten Network.  

All three Monroe County HS Football teams win on final night of regular season
For the first time this season all three Monroe County High School Football Teams won on the same night as the high school football regular season came to a close Friday Night.

Bloomington North held off a winless Southport team 35-27 to end the regular season at 5-4. The Cardinals scored with 1:35 left in the game to get within eight but Graham Freund recovered the onside kick and Bloomington North was able to run out the clock.  Dash King threw 3 touchdown passes and interception. Cody Mikulich ran for two touchdown’s and had a receiving touchdown. Bloomington North will host Seymour in Class 5A Sectional Semifinals on October 28.

Bloomington South routed Seymour 42-13 on the road as the Panthers end the regular season at 7-1 on the season and will carry a six-game winning streak into their Class 5A Sectional Semifinal matchup at Columbus East on October 28.  The Panther defense held its opponents to 15 points or less in all but one game this season. Seymour 6-3 who won the Hoosier Hills Conference title this season saw its five-game winning streak snapped and suffer its first home loss of the season. 

Edgewood won on the road for the first time this season beating winless Brown County 14-6. The Mustangs take back the Talon and Hoof Trophy for the first time since 2019. Edgewood snapped a seven-game losing streak but the Mustangs who end the regular season at 2-7 get ready for a long road trip next week to start sectional play when they travel to East Central to face 7-2 Trojan squad who lost its final regular season game to Indianapolis Roncalli 21-19 at home.

Bloomington South Girls, Bloomington North Boys win Cross Country Regionals at Edgewood
It was a beautiful Saturday Morning for a run as the Bloomington South Girls and Bloomington North Boys won the Cross-Country Regional Titles at Edgewood HS. The Semi State will be held at Brown County Saturday with the Girls race starting at 11:30am and the Boys race at 12:15 pm.

On the Girls side Bloomington South won with 32 points and senior and Indiana University Commit Lilly Meyers took home the Individual Regional Title winning by 22 seconds over Edgewood Senior Clara Crain. Northview finished second with 56 points followed by Edgewood with 57. Bloomington North finished 4th with 98 points and Terre Haute South rounds out the top five with 169 points. All five teams advance to the Semi State.  Lighthouse Christian Academy Senior Madeline Esslinger finished 47th overall and Sophomore finished 61st and neither will advance to the Semi State.

On the Boys Side Bloomington North won with 44 points. Bloomington South finished second with 54 points and Junior Ryan Reham took home the individual title winning by 10 seconds over his teammate Senior Jack Gildea. Edgewood finished 3rd with 97 points followed by Northview in fourth with 97 and Terre Haute South rounds out the top five with 137 points. All five teams advance to the Semi State. Lighthouse Christian Academy Junior Avery Lucek finished 44th overall and will not advance to Semi State.

The HS Volleyball season comes to end for The Monroe County teams in Sectionals
The 2022 High School Volleyball Season came to a close Saturday for Bloomington North, Edgewood, and Bloomington South on Saturday as all three lost in the Sectionals.  Lighthouse Christian saw its season end on Thursday with a 3-0 loss to North Central (Farmersburg) in the Class 1A Sectional at Clay City. 

In Class 4A at Bloomington South Center Grove beat Bloomington North 3-0 to win the sectional championship. Bloomington North beat Mooresville 3-0 and Martinsville 3-1 to advance to the championship game. Center Grove beat Bloomington South 3-1 and Greenwood 3-0 before dispatching the Cougars to advance to Regional. Center Grove will make a return trip to Bloomington Saturday as the Trojans take on Floyd Central in the first regional semifinal at 11am at Bloomington North. Columbus East and Castle will meet at 1pm with the championship game at 7pm.

In Class 3A at Edgewood the Mustangs lost 3-1 to Northview in the Semifinals after beating South Vermillion 3-0 Thursday Night in the first round. Northview who beat Owen Valley 3-0 Thursday night won the Sectional Championship with a 3-0 win over Indian Creek. Indian Creek beat Brown County 3-2 in the other semifinal. Northview faces Western Boone Saturday at 10am in the Regional Semifinal at Monrovia. Speedway and Guerin Catholic will meet at 12pm in the second semifinal with the championship game scheduled for 7pm.

In Class 1A White River Valley beat Clay City 3-0 for the Sectional Title. The Wolverines got passed North Central 3-0 in the semifinals and Shakamak 3-0 in the first-round while Clay City beat Bloomfield 3-2 in the other Semifinal.  White River Valley will take on Indianapolis Lutheran in the second game of the Edinburgh Regional Saturday at 12pm. The Indiana School for The Deaf and Edinburgh will meet at 10am with the winners meeting in the championship game at 6pm.
