Indiana teacher allegedly tells student about “kill list”
A teacher at St. Stanislaus School, in East Chicago, Indiana, was detained after allegedly telling a student that he or she was on her “kill list.” This list was said to include other students and members of the school staff. Another student reportedly overheard the conversation and alerted the school Principal of the matter. The Principal then spoke with the teacher, 25-year-old Angelica Carrasquillo-Torres, where she was said to have admitted to the conversation. Carrasquillo-Torres was asked to leave the school campus, and Police were notified of the incident. The matter is currently under investigation, although no formal charges have been filed.
Indiana Supreme Court makes determination in Bloomington v. Guenther
The Indiana Supreme Court denied a petition asking the state’s high court to overturn the Court of Appeals’ decision in favor of the City of Bloomington. By declining to reconsider the case, the Supreme Court allowed the Court of Appeals’ ruling to stand, allowing the 2020 appointment of Chris Cockerham to the Bloomington Planning Commission by Mayor Hamilton. The controversy came after William Ellis, then Chair of the Monroe County Republican Party, made an appointment of Andrew Guenther to the same vacant seat, claiming that State Statute allowed him to do so, considering Mayor Hamilton had failed to make an appointment to the commission within the legally allotted timeframe. The Court’s ruling seals the appointment of Cockerham, and allows him to continue to serve as he has done since 2020.
Indiana youth program re=opens after Covid hiatus
My Community, My Vision (MCMV) is a youth-driven placemaking partnership between the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA) and Patronicity. While the program was launched in 2016, IHCDA is re-introducing the program in 2022 following the Covid-19 pandemic with a new vision for connecting young people in Indiana to the places they live and allowing them the opportunity to make a positive impact in their communities. In collaboration with the Indiana Philanthropy Alliance (IPA) and Association of Indiana Municipalities (AIM) Youth Council Networks, cohorts of youth council students will participate in a semester-long program focused on asset-based community development, stakeholder engagement, and placemaking. Over the course of four months, students will develop an idea for a place-based community project, determine the project’s scope and budget, and fundraise for their project utilizing Patronicity’s crowdfunding website. Teams that meet a fundraising goal by the end of the semester will be eligible to receive a dollar-for-dollar match of IHCDA grant funds to contribute to their project.
Student youth council teams, alongside their foundation or local unit of government sponsor, will utilize these funds to see their project—whether a trail, park, plaza, mural, or other concept—built in their town or city to be a place for their community members to enjoy for years to come.
