
Indiana University Football hosts Maryland Saturday afternoon
The backend of a two-game homestand brings Maryland to town for a matchup with the Indiana football program. The Hoosiers and Terrapins will meet for the 11th time in program history and the ninth as Big Ten opponents. • Indiana (3-3, 1-2 B1G) will look to rebound after its first home loss of the season against Maryland (4-2, 1-2 B1G) on Saturday, Oct. 15. Kickoff is set for 3:30pm inside Memorial Stadium (52,656; Field Turf) on ESPN2. The Hoosiers are 7-3 all-time against the Terrapins, including a 4-1 record in Bloomington. With Maryland receiving votes in the AP and Coaches polls, it gives IU an opponent that is currently ranked or receiving votes on the schedule for five of the last seven weeks. Three (Michigan, Penn State and Ohio State) sit ranked among the top 10 in this week’s poll.
On Friday night, the 2022 Indiana University Hall of Fame class will be inducted and then the class of Ashley Benson (Volleyball, 2007-10), Jenn Cristy (Women’s Swimming, 1998-01), Don Fischer (Play-by-Play Announcer, 1973-present), Lin Loring (Women’s Tennis Coach, 1977-2017), Tina Parrott (Women’s Track and Field, 1983-86), and D.J. White (Men’s Basketball, 2005-08) will then be recognized at halftime of the on Saturday.
The Hoosiers are coming off a 33-10 loss to 4th ranked Michigan last Saturday afternoon. Maryland has lost three of the last four in this series, is 1-4 all-time in Bloomington and hasn’t been 5-2 since 2016. The Terrapins have scored 27 or more points in eight consecutive games. Maryland has scored four touchdowns and two field goals on its first drives and is the only FBS team to score on its opening possession in every game this season. Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa threw for a career best 419 yards in last season’s 38-35 victory over the Hoosiers and enters this week ranked in the FBS’ top 25 in completion percentage (74.1), completions per game (24.3), yards passing (1,731) and total offense (303.2). He is the younger brother of Miami Dolphins Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Tight end Corey Dyches has 22 catches for a team-high 322 yards. Maryland is 3rd in the Big Ten this season with 15 sacks.
16th Ranked IU Men’s Soccer hosts 25th ranked Penn State
No. 16-ranked Indiana men’s soccer (5-2-4, 1-1-3 B1G) returns to Bill Armstrong Stadium tonight when it hosts Penn State (5-3-3, 2-0-2 B1G) in Big Ten Conference play. The match will be televised on Big Ten Network with kickoff set for 6:30pm. Fans can also stream the match at foxsports.com/live. The first 250 fans at Friday’s match will receive a free IU men’s soccer koozie. Additionally, fans may purchase $5 tickets at the gate when they show their IU football ticket for Saturday’s game against Maryland.
Indiana is unbeaten in 15 straight home matches going back to the 2021 season with a 4-0-2 home record this season. The Nittany Lions sit two points above the Hoosiers on the Big Ten Table with a game in hand. Redshirt senior Daniel Munie has tallied two goals and a clean sheet in three matches since returning from injury. The Hoosiers have scored 21 goals from 11 unique goal scorers this season. Redshirt senior Ryan Whittenbrink leads the Hoosiers in goals (5) and points (13). • A win for IU tonight would be No. 800 in the program’s illustrious history.
Penn State comes into the match with a 5-3-3 record and sits second in the Big Ten table with eight points (2-0-2). Its last result was a 4-1 win versus Michigan State. The Nittany Lions are led by fifth-year head coach Jeff Cook. Cook has compiled a 44-25-11 record at Penn State and a 224-163-60 career record in 25 seasons as a head coach. Junior forward Peter Mangione and senior forward Liam Butts have totaled 11 goals for the Nittany Lions, with Mangione leading the team with six tallies. Penn State has averaged 1.7 goals per match, while conceding a 1.3 goals against average.
Indiana has had the better of the matchup between two historic programs, leading the all-time series 35-15-5. 2021 featured two important contests between IU and PSU. In the first match, Indiana handed the Nittany Lions one of their two conference losses. Penn State would get revenge in the Big Ten Tournament final with a 3-0 victory to capture the championship double. The last two Big Ten Tournament Champions have been decided by this matchup. In the adjusted 2020-21 season, Indiana won its third straight Big Ten double after defeating the Nittany Lions in penalties. Coming into that match, IU had won five straight over PSU.
Three Star Defensive Back Travon West decommits from Indiana University Football
Indiana University Football is down to nine players in the class of 2023. On Thursday, Travon West announced his decision to decommit from Indiana University and reopen his recruitment. West verbally committed to Indiana on June 29, choosing the Hoosiers over Power Five offers from West Virginia, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech and Kansas State, as well as offers from Appalachian State, Charlotte, East Carolina, Eastern Kentucky, Liberty, Marshall, Memphis and Troy. West is a 6-foot, 170-pound, three-star defensive back from Wren High School in Piedmont, S.C. According to 247Sports Composite, he’s the No. 98 cornerback and No. 1013 player in the nation in the class of 2023.
Final week of regular season for Indiana high school football
This is week 9 in Indiana High School Football and means the final week of the regular season tonight for all the teams across the state before the state tournament kicks off next week.
6-1 Bloomington South travels to 6-2 Seymour at 7pm. The Panthers are well rested after a week off and a Conference Indiana Championship. Bloomington South has a five-game winning streak averaging 39.4 points on offense and giving up 11 points on defense. Seymour is 6-2 and won the Hoosier Hills Conference title. The Owls have a five-game winning streak going into tonight’s game. Seymour averages 24.6 points per game and gives up 20.4 on defense.
4-4 Bloomington North will host 0-8 Southport at 7pm on the Northside of Bloomington. The Cougars are coming off a 48-42 loss at Columbus North last week. Bloomington North is averaging 30.6 points on offense and giving up 28.4 points on defense. Southport is looking to get second year head coach Alex Bettag his first career win after losing 18 straight games. The Cardinals have scored 7 or fewer points four games this season. Southport has not scored more than 20 points in a game this season.
1-7 Edgewood travels to 0-8 Brown County as the teams battle for the Hoof and Talon Trophy at 7pm. Edgewood has not won since week 1 when they beat Mitchell 38-16. Edgewood averages 14.1 points on offense and 44.5 on defense. Brown County is coming off 50-13 loss at home to North Putnam last week. The Eagles have scored 7 or fewer points in four games and have only scored over 20 points in one game this season and that was 29-27 loss at Cloverdale in week 3.
Edgewood Hosts Girls and Boys Cross Country Regionals
Edgewood HS will host the IHSAA Girls and Boys Cross Country Regionals Saturday Morning with the Girls race starting at 11am and Boys Race at 11:30am. The top five teams and the top 10 individuals who are not on a qualifying team will advance to the Semi State next Saturday at Brown County.
On the Girls side teams include Sectional Champions Bloomington South and Northview. Edgewood, Bloomington North, Eastern Greene, Orleans, Terre Haute North, Terre Haute South, Owen Valley and Clay City all advanced with a top 5 finish in the team standings. Bloomington South Senior Lilly Meyers and Linton Junior Peyton Smith won the individual sectional titles. Lighthouse Chirstian Academy Seniors Madeline Esslinger and Sophomore Zoe Crites are competing as individuals who finished in the top 10 but not on a qualifying team
On the Boys side teams include Sectional Champions Bloomington North and Northview. Bloomington South, Edgewood Orleans, Bedford North Lawrence, Terre Haute South, Terre Haute North, Clay City and West Vigo all advanced with a top 5 finish in the team standings. Bloomington South Senior Ryan Rheam and Terre Haute North Senior Dylan Zeck won the individual sectional titles. Lighthouse Christian Academy Junior Avery Lueck will compete as individual as he finished in the top 10 but not on a qualifying team.
