Indiana Supreme Court continues injunction against abortion ban until appeals are heard
Before considering the Constitutional merit, the Indiana Supreme Court issued an order preventing the enforcement of Indiana’s new bans on abortion. The Indiana Supreme Court will now handle all appeals of last month’s Court Order, by Owen County Judge Kelsey Hanlon to block the law, just days after it went into effect. The law went into effect for the first time on August 5th, but was effectively banned just 3 weeks later, on September 15th. The law had essentially prohibited abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy, except in cases of rape and incest, before 10 weeks post-fertilization; to protect the life and physical health of the mother; or, if a fetus is diagnosed with a lethal anomaly. Additionally, the new law stated that the abortions which would be allowed, could only happen in hospitals and outpatient surgical centers, and not in clinics.
