
Indiana University Football drops one at Rutgers
The Indiana University Football Team lost to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 24-17 at SHI Stadium in Piscataway New Jersey Saturday afternoon. The Hoosiers are 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the Big Ten while Rutgers is 4-3 overall and 1-3 in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers will be off this Saturday and cannot come a better time with Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan State and Purdue left on the schedule. “We have a lot of work to be done in a lot of areas, “Head Coach Tom Allen told Voice of the Hoosiers Don Fischer in his post-game radio show. “We have to get guys rested and healthy and get their minds and bodies back together. Physically we have to be able to have a strong last four games” Allen Said.
The Hoosiers came out of the gate fast with Jaylin Lucas taking the opening kickoff 93 yards to the house and a 7-0 lead just 11 seconds into the game. Connor Bazelak scored his first rushing touchdown of his IU career when he took it 7 yards with 7:05 left in the First Quarter. Rutgers scored with 9:53 left before halftime when Noah Vedral found Sean Ryan on a 15-yard pass to make it 14-7. “I am very disappointed,” Allen told Fischer. “We got off to a good start like we wanted to. We moved the ball down the field twice in the first quarter. We should have gotten points the second time but did not”.
Rutgers took control in the second half outscoring the Hoosiers 17-3. The Scarlet Knights scored with 8:27 left in the Third quarter when Jude McAtamney hit a 49-yard field goal to get Rutgers within four. Samuel Brown V scored on a 2-yard run with 38 seconds left in the third quarter to take the lead 17-14. Rutgers scored when Bazelak was intercepted in the end zone and Scarlet Knights with 5:12 left to make it 24-14. Charles Campbell added a 39-yard field goal after he missed one earlier in the fourth quarter with 1:18 left as Rutgers recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock.
Connor Bazelak was 23-41 passing for 210 yards with an interception and was sacked once. The Indiana running game continues to struggle with 19 carries on 72 yards and the Bazelak touchdown. Nine Hoosiers caught passes lead by Javon Swinton with 47 yards on three catches. Noah Vedral was 12-24 passing for 113 yards and 1 touchdown. Samuel Brown V rushed 28 times for 101 yards and a touchdown as Rutgers had 50 carries for 205 yards. Sean Ryan caught 3 passes for 59 yards and a touchdown.
Indiana University Volleyball wins at #25 Michigan and Michigan State
The Indiana University Volleyball Team beat 25th ranked Michigan 3-1 Friday night at Cliff Keen Arena in Ann Arbor. It was the first time since 2019 when the Hoosiers beat number 14 Kentucky in Lexington. The Hoosiers beat a ranked conference on the road for the first time since 2013 when they took down 10th ranked Michigan State. This marked the third time that Indiana has beaten a ranked opponent under head coach Steve Aird and the second time it has come against Michigan with the Hoosiers beating the Wolverines in Wilkinson Hall in 2018.
After the Hoosiers lost the first set 25-21 Indiana came out and took the next three 25-22, 25-19 and 25-23. Mady Saris had 16 kills. Morgan Geddes had 12 kills and four service aces. Paula Cerame had 20 digs and it’s the third straight match she has had 20 + digs. Kaley Rammelsberg returned for the first time in over a month from injury and Hoosiers got contributions from everyone in the lineup. Camryn Haworth had 35 assists to go with four digs and Candela Alsonso-Corecelles had 9 kills while hitting .240 on 25 attempts.
Indiana Beat Michigan State in five sets on Sunday afternoon in East Lansing Michigan State won game 1 25-19 as Indiana took game 2 25-19. The Spartans won game 3 25-20 Indiana took game 4 25-13 and won the fifth game 15-13. The Hoosiers have won three matches in a row and improve to 12-10 overall along with a 5-5 Big Ten record. Indiana will host Rutgers Friday at 7pm in Wilkinson Hall.
Bloomington North Senior Nicholas Shirley comes up short in individual state Tennis final
Bloomington North Senior Nicholas Shirley lost to Senior Aaron Gu of Harrison (West Lafayette) in the IHSAA Boys Individual State Tennis Finals Saturday afternoon at Park Tudor School in Indianapolis. Gu won in straight sets 6-4 6-4 to finish the season 30-0. Shirley ended his season at 19-2 and became the first Cougar to appear in an Individual state final since Mac Rogers in 2017. Ray Leonard was the only other Bloomington North player to appear in a final and did so in his junior season in 2009. Bloomington South’s Ronnie Schnieder won three state titles from 2010-2012.
Shirley beat Fishers Senior Reese Knoderer 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) in Friday’s quarterfinal matchup. Shirley defeated Tyler Li of Culver Academies 5-7, 6-4 and 6-4 in the semifinals. Shirley played 10 state tournament matches and finished with a record of 9-1 adding to a 10-1 regular season record.
Three Bloomington teams advance to Cross Country State Finals
Bloomington will be will represented this Saturday after the Girls and Boys Cross Country State Finals at the Lavern Gibson Cross Country course in Terre Haute. The Bloomington South Girls and Boys along with the Bloomington North Boys will advance after finishing in the top 5 of the Semi State meets at Brown County on Saturday. Hannah Crain of Edgewood will make it as an individual finishing 14th overall. On the boy’s side Zane Meyer and Caleb Webb of Edgewood will make it as individuals after they finished 38th and 42nd overall.
Bloomington South girls finished second with 110 points as Columbus North won the title with 58 points and Senior Julia Kessler won the Individual Title. Edgewood finished 7th with 185 points and Bloomington North finished 10th with 279.
Columbus North won the Boys title with a score of 55. Bloomington South was third with 127 Points and Bloomington North finished fourth with 131 points. Edgewood finished 8th with 265 points. New Albany Senior Aidan Lord won the Individual title by six seconds over Bloomington South Junior Ryan Rheam. The Girls race with start at noon on Saturday and the Boys will follow at 2pm.
Edgewood Football shutout at East Central
Edgewood Football saw it season come to a close Friday Night with a 53-0 loss at East Central in the first round of the Class 4A Sectionals. The Mustangs finish the season 2-8 and were shut out for the second time this season. Coach Caleb True has a 4-16 record in two seasons at the school. Edgewood scored 127 points for an average of 12.7 points per game while the opponent scored 415 points for a 41.5 average. East Central improves to 8-2 on the season and will travel to Sliver Creek 5-5 Friday at 7pm for the Semifinal. Silver Creek beat Jennings County (3-7) 53-42 on the road Friday Night. The other semifinal will see Bedford North Lawrence 6-4 travel to Martinsville 7-3 at 7pm. Bedford North Lawrence won at Shelbyville (1-9) 42-21 while Martinsville won at Greenwood (1-9) 49-0.
