Indiana University Women’s Basketball wins season opener over Vermont
Indiana University Women’s Basketball kicked off the 2022-23 regular season with an 86-49 win over the Vermont Catamounts Tuesday night in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. It was the first ever meeting between the two teams. The game saw eight lead changes early, with Vermont’s last lead 12-11 with 2:55 left in the first quarter. Indiana controlled the game with 8-2 run to end the first quarter leading 20-13. The Hoosiers led 42-27 at half, led 66-38 at the end third quarter, and the Hoosiers finished the game 20-11 in the fourth quarter.

The Hoosiers were led by Freshman Yarden Garzon with 19 Points going for 7-12 from the field and 5-8 from three-point range. Garzon gets her first career start in her first game at IU and the 6-3 guard from Israel has impressed her teammates and that is testament to playing overseas for a long time. “The way she carries herself on and off the court speaks to who she is” said Mackenzie Holmes after the game. “She always keeps her head up and never gets down,” Holmes said.

“We see what [Garzon] does in practice every day and we have high standards here, and a lot of new terminology and [our new players] have responded well to it,” said All-American Guard Grace Berger, after the game.

Holmes had 16 points, 5 rebounds, and block Vermont’s first shot of the game. Berger added 14 points and scored seven points for the Hoosiers. Sara Scalia scored 11 points and hit three 3-pointers. The Hoosiers shot 49% from the field, 12-25 from three-point range for 48%, and 10-15 from the free throw line for 66%. IU pulled down 39 Rebounds, 18 assists, 11 steals, 5 blocks, and 11 turnovers.

IU Head Coach Teri Moren was pleased to get this first game out of the way. “Good first win to get under our belt but we still have work to do defensively especially by our new kids,” she said.

Vermont was led by Greenwood Indiana native Emma Utterback with 19 points. The Center Grove Graduate scored 10 points in the first 11 minutes of the game and had 12 points in the first half. Zionsville HS Graduate Delaney Richason scored 8 points in which she hit two three pointers, scoring the first six point for the Catamounts in the game as the two Indiana natives scored the first 16 points of the game for Vermont. Catherine Gilwee scores the first Vermont basket that was not by native Hoosier at 6:34 mark before halftime and she finished the game with 11 points. Vermont shot 35% from the field, 5-12 from three-point range for 41%, and 8-14 from the free throw line for 57%. The Catamounts pulled down 30 rebounds, 8 assists, 6 steals, 2 blocks, and committed 23 turnovers.

Indiana will return to action this Friday when they host the UMass Lowell Riverhawks at 7pm in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. UMass Lowell is 0-1 on the season after falling 81-53 Monday evening at Boston College.
