In a downtown press conference, the two-term incumbent Mayor of Indianapolis announced he will be seeking a third term in the 2023 City Elections. Indiana changes for Nonprofit tax filing you should know about
In 2022, the Indiana General Assembly recently passed legislation revising the filing frequency for Form NP-20, Nonprofit Organization’s Annual Report, from annually to every five years. You will need to file Form NP-20 for tax year 2021 in 2022 to qualify for the new filing frequency, which is based on the Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN). This also applies to fiscal year filers whose tax years end before Aug. 1, 2022.
You will not need to file Form NP-20 in 2023 for the 2022 calendar year. In addition, fiscal year filers who file Form NP-20 for a fiscal year ending after July 31, 2022, will not need to file an NP-20 during the 2023 calendar year.
Beginning Jan. 1, 2023, your sales tax exemption certificate will be available only through the Indiana Taxpayer Information Management Engine, INTIME, DOR’s e-services portal.
Effective July 1, 2022, nonprofits must collect state gross retail tax on sales after exceeding $20,000 in a calendar year. This includes sales made by all units operating under the organization’s registration with DOR.
Nonprofit customers with open and active accounts and a sales tax-exempt checkbox marked in the Indiana Tax System (ITS) received a letter in early November detailing upcoming changes to sales tax requirements and annual report filings. For more information, see Tax Information Bulletin #10, Application of Sales tax to Nonprofit Organizations.

In 2021, Indiana Attorney General Rokita’s office returned over $48 million in unclaimed property to its rightful owners. This year alone, the Office has returned over $50 million. Here’s how to make sure your property doesn’t go unclaimed:
- Keep a record of all bank accounts.
- Record all stock certificates and be sure to cash all dividends received.
- Record all utility deposits, including telephone, cable, and electricity deposits.
- Cash all checks promptly.
- Update your address with all businesses when you move.
- Talk to loved ones about any safe deposit boxes you own.
Once unclaimed property is in its custody, the Unclaimed Property Division at Attorney General Rokita’s office conducts outreach efforts to locate the rightful owners or heirs. Individuals and/or businesses have 25 years to claim money once it is reported to the Unclaimed Property Division.
Over $700 million remains to be claimed, so it’s time to put away the leftovers and find something else to be thankful for at IndianaUnclaimed.gov or text CLAIM to 46220 to search your name, family, or business. You can also contact the Unclaimed Property Division at 1-866-462-5246 or updmail@atg.in.gov. You may also like and/or follow the Unclaimed Property Division on Facebook.
