
Indiana University Men’s & Women’s Basketball move up in AP rankings
After a 2-0 week that included a high major road win at Xavier, IU men’s basketball moved up a spot to No. 11 in the new AP top-25 released on Monday. It marks the second time Indiana has moved up a spot after opening the season at No. 13. A trio of teams IU will face in the coming weeks are also ranked in the top-15. The Hoosiers host No. 1 North Carolina next week, and they’ll play No. 14 Arizona and No. 3 Kansas in December. Joining Indiana (4-0) from the Big Ten is previously ranked No. 16 Illinois. No. 12 Michigan State made its debut as did Maryland, Purdue and Iowa in the No. 23 through 25 spots, respectively. Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State are also receiving votes. The No. 11 ranking is IU’s best since Dec. 2016.
Meanwhile, following a 3-0 week that included a win at Tennessee, the IU women moved up six spots to No. 6 in the updated AP top-25, matching their second-highest ranking ever. That marks the 61st consecutive week the Hoosiers have appeared in the Associated Press poll, dating back to the 2019-20 season. The IU women (5-0) return to action later this week with games against Auburn and Memphis in Las Vegas on Friday and Saturday. Those games will be streamed on Flo Hoops.
Indiana University Volleyball Players Paula Cerame & Camryn Haworth earn Big Ten honors
Career bests paired with outstanding wins over Northwestern and No. 5 Ohio State earned Paula Cerame and Camryn Haworth a spot on the Big Ten’s Weekly Honor Roll, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon. Cerame was named Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week while Haworth earned a nod as the league’s Setter of the Week. This marks the first time in program history that the Hoosiers have placed two on the conference’s weekly honor roll in the same week. The duo helped make history this weekend, first earning a tough win over Northwestern before picking off No. 5 Ohio State for the program’s first road win against a top-five team.
Haworth had one of the best stat lines in the nation this weekend, combining for 82 assists, 27 digs, 18 kills, 11 blocks and one ace in two matches. The Fishers, Ind. native had the program’s first triple-double since 2001 on Friday with a remarkable 37 assists, 11 digs and 10 kills. She also tallied seven blocks, finishing just three away from a quadruple double. She followed that performance with a double-double (45 assists, 16 digs) in the victory over the No. 5 Buckeyes. Haworth becomes the first Hoosier in program history to win Big Ten Setter of the Week.
Cerame was fantastic out of the back row this weekend, combining for 52 digs in two matches including a career best 29 against Ohio State. The San Juan, Puerto Rico native had 23 digs and six assists against Northwestern before following that up with her first career double-double (29 digs,12 assists) in the victory over the Buckeyes. She becomes the first IU player to win Defensive Player of the Week laurels since Leyla Blackwell earned the honor on Feb. 8, 2020. Cerame’s 29 digs against Ohio State marked the sixth most in a single game in program history and the second most in one match during the rally era. IU returns home to face Illinois tomorrow at 5pm and Maryland on Friday at 5pm in the final two matches of the regular season as the program pushes for its first NCAA Tournament bid since 2010.
NCAA names Indianapolis host of 2028 Women’s Basketball Final Four
The NCAA announced Monday that Indianapolis will host the 2028 Women’s Final Four. Other host cities for upcoming Final Four rounds were also announced: 2027: Columbus, Ohio (Nationwide Arena), 2029: San Antonio, Texas (Alamodome), 2030: Portland, Oregon (Moda Center) and 2031: Dallas, Texas (American Airlines Center).
“The Women’s Final Four is the premier women’s basketball event in the country, and it’s exciting to see the unprecedented amount of interest from cities to host in the future,” said Lisa Peterson, chair of the committee and senior associate commissioner for sports management with the Pac-12 Conference. “The committee appreciates all the cities involved in the highly competitive bid process. When we crown a national champion in the selected cities, our student-athletes, coaches and fans will have enjoyed an amazing championship experience.
Indianapolis has hosted the Women’s Final Four three times in the past: 2005, 2011 and 2016. UConn made history during the 2016 tournament, winning its fourth consecutive national championship the first time that had happened in Division I women’s basketball.
Indiana University Cross Country wraps up 2022 season The 2022 Cross Country season came to a finish on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Oklahoma State with an outstanding NCAA Championship meet. Three Hoosiers were present to partake in the racing with Gabriel Sanchez (97th) running in the Men’s 10K and Sarah Schmitt (82nd) and Mariah Wehrle (131st) in the Women’s 6K. Northern Arizona and NC State retained the men’s and women’s team titles respectively with Katelyn Tuohy (NC State) and Charles Hicks (Stanford) winning individual honors.
Sanchez set a six-second personal best, crossing the line in 30:11.3 to break into the top-100 nationally of over 250+ runners. Schmitt closed out her final collegiate cross-country race in 20:30.4 while Wehrle debuted at the national meet with a time of 20:48.3 Ron Helmer coached his final cross-country meet in his career. His tenure at IU saw him coach 11 All-Americans in Cross Country and saw the Hoosiers win the 2013 Big Ten Men’s Cross-Country title. The focus now turns to the Indoor Track and Field campaign which will begin on Dec. 9.
2023 Big Ten Super Saturday Matchup announced
The Big Ten Conference has announced the matchup for the 2023 Big Ten Super Saturday event, to be held at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York City. On Saturday, Feb. 4, Rutgers will take on Michigan State in men’s basketball at “The World’s Most Famous Arena.” The Scarlet Knights will serve as the home team and the game will tip-off at noon ET on FOX.
Rutgers will make its second trip to Madison Square Garden since the Big Ten Tournament was played there in 2018, and first since facing Michigan in the 2020 Big Ten Super Saturday contest. Michigan State has made two appearances in Manhattan since the 2018 conference tournament, facing No. 3 Kansas last season and No. 2 Kentucky in 2019, both in the State Farm Champions Classic.
While the Spartans have won 10 of the teams’ 12 meetings in Big Ten Conference play, Rutgers has won two of the last three and will be looking for its first back-to-back victories over Michigan State when the teams meet on Feb. 4. In last year’s only meeting, Rutgers’ Ron Harper Jr. and Clifford Omoruyi scored 17 points each to lead six Scarlet Knights in double-figures, as Rutgers scored a home win over the Spartans. Gabe Brown led Michigan State with 20 points.
