Suspect in Bloomington homocide taken into custody
Yesterday morning just after midnight, Bloomington Police Officers responded to the 1400 block of N Woodburn Avenue for multiple reports of shots fired in the area. As officers were en route, Central Emergency Dispatch received another call regarding a vehicle crash in front of the La Bonita Restaurant & Market just north of this location. Upon the arrival of officers, it was determined that a gray Honda passenger car had crashed into another parked vehicle and the driver of the Honda had been shot. Officers immediately began rendering aid to the victim until the arrival of ambulance personnel. The victim was then transported to the IU Health Bloomington Hospital where she was later pronounced deceased. The shooting victim has been identified by Monroe County Coroner Joani Shields as Keisha Huntington (18, Bloomington).
Investigators located three empty 9mm shell casings in the parking lot of Northcrest Apartments in the 1400 block of N Woodburn Avenue, which is where the shooting is believed to have occurred. Several individuals were interviewed and provided information to detectives. It is believed that the victim was attempting to flee from the area after the suspect tried to rob both she and a passenger in the car and she was shot while driving away from the suspect.
Investigators were able to identify a suspect, which was determined to be a 16 year-old male. At approximately 11:15 a.m., investigators were able to locate the suspect in an apartment in the 900 block of N Rogers Street. A negotiator with the Bloomington Police Department made contact with the male via telephone, and he eventually exited the apartment and was taken into custody without incident.
The 16 year-old suspect will be transported to the Southwest Indiana Regional Youth Village in Vincennes, Indiana to be housed there while awaiting formal charging by the Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office.
At this time, the name of the suspect is not being released due to his status as a juvenile offender and no further information is available to be released, as this is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Detective Joe Henry at (812)349-3907.

$1.7M in Conrad Prebys Foundation grants support IU Kelley & Jacobs Schools
Efforts to foster greater student diversity at the Kelley School of Business and support public performances during the Jacobs School of Music’s centennial year received crucial financial support through grants to Indiana University from the Conrad Prebys Foundation. The $1.7 million in grants to IU are among the inaugural awards from the Conrad Prebys Foundation, an organization continuing the philanthropic legacy of Conrad Prebys. A native of South Bend, Indiana, Prebys earned a bachelor’s degree from the Kelley School in 1955 and went on to become a highly successful real estate developer and philanthropist in southern California.
The Kelley School will receive $1 million to increase the size of its Prebys Scholars Program, which was established through a $20 million gift he made in 2015. Students chosen as Prebys Scholars traditionally are underrepresented in the field of business. They receive funding toward standard tuition and fees, as well as other support in the form of an advisor and a Kelley student mentor.
Another $700,000 will be used to underwrite the performance season during the 2021-22 academic year, the Jacobs School of Music’s centennial year. The season will be known as the Conrad T. Prebys Centennial Performance Season and will include festivities celebrating the countless artists who have touched the internationally renowned school over the past 100 years.
