Indiana Women’s Basketball Takes on Arizona in Elite 8
Indiana Women’s Basketball will face 3 seed Arizona in the Mercado Region Championship Game tonight at 9 PM on ESPN. The 4th seed Hoosiers beat top seed NC State 73-70 and the Wildcats beat 2 seed Texas A&M 74-59 to get both teams to their first elite 8 appearance. Indiana was led by Ali Patberg with 17 points, Mackenzie Holmes with 16 Points, Nicole Cardano-Hillary 14 points and double-doubles Grace Berger 12 Points 12 Rebounds and Aleska Gulbe 11 points and 10 rebounds. Indiana is 21-5 on the year and forced 17 NC State turnovers that led 20 points off those turnovers. Indiana had 10 steals to 1 for the Wolfpack. It’s the first time that Indiana has beaten NC State after losing the first 4 meetings. Arizona is 19-5 and led by Coach Adia Barnes who is the all-time leading scorer in Arizona Women’s Basketball history. Barnes led the Wildcats to the 1998 Sweet 16 when they lost to Connecticut which was the schools only other Sweet 16 Appearance and guided the Wildcats to the 2019 WNIT Championship. Arizona has Junior Bendu Yeaney played at IU from 2017-19 before going to Arizona. Yeaney played 76 games and had 69 starts for the Hoosiers. She Averaged 8.5 Points and 4.3 Rebounds and helped the Hoosiers to 2018 WNIT Championship and 2019 NCAA Tournament where they lost to Oregon in the 2nd round.
Indiana Men’s Basketball Hires Mike Woodson as Coach
Indiana Men’s Basketball has hired former IU Player Mike Woodson as Men’s Head Basketball Coach. Woodson becomes the 30th Men’s Basketball Coach in School History. Woodson played for the Hoosiers from 1976-80. The 63-year-old Woodson Played at Broad Ripple HS in Indianapolis and has 25 years of NBA Coaching Experience. Woodson has 9 years of head coaching expeience with 6 years with the Atlanta Hawks and 3 with the New York Knicks. Woodson was in his 2nd stint with the Knicks as an assistant coach. The deal is for 6 years and his first job is to convince 6 players to withdraw from the transfer portal and comeback to IU. Senior Al Durham, Redshirt Juniors Race Thompson and Parker Stewart, Sophomore Armaan Franklin and Freshman Jordan Geronimo and Kristian Lander are allowed to talk to other schools but can return to Indiana if they chose.
Indiana Junior Diver Andrew Capobianco Wins 2nd Straight 3 Meter Diving National Championship
Indiana Junior Andrew Capobianco won his 2nd straight NCAA Championship in 3 Meter Diving in his home state of North Carolina. Capobianco won with a career high 505.20 in Greensboro and he is from Holly Springs. He won it in 2019 with no meet last year due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. He gives the Hoosiers the 8th title in this event. The Hoosiers that have won this title are Ken Sitzberger won it 1965 and 1967. Jim Henry in 1969 and 1970 Brian Bungum in 1977 and Rob Bollinger in 1981. The Hoosiers Finished 6th place with 207 points.
Indiana Women’s Soccer beats Michigan 2-0
Indiana beat Michigan 2-0 in Women’s Soccer in Ann Arbor Sunday Afternoon. The Hoosiers got both their goals in the first half. Avery Lockwood got on the board first at 36.02 mark with the assist Gabbi Rennie. Sofia Black scored at 43.21 mark with assist to Anna Bennett. The Hoosiers are 5-4 while Michigan falls to 5-3-2 on the season. Indiana is back in action this Wednesday when they Host Michigan State at Noon.
