#21 Indiana Men’s Basketball closes January with a loss at Maryland The Indiana men’s basketball team (15-7, 6-5 Big Ten) could not overcome an eight-point halftime lead against the Maryland Terrapins (15-7, 6-5 Big Ten) on Tuesday night at the Xfinity Center. The Hoosiers fell 66-55.  Senior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis became the fourth Hoosier in program history to pull down 1,000 career rebounds. He totaled 18 points and 20 rebounds for the Hoosiers. Race Thompson added 11 points. Indiana shot 21-56 from the field for 37%, 3-11 from three-point range for 37% and 10-12 from the free throw line for 83%. The Hoosiers will host Top Ranked Purdue on Saturday at 4pm.

Jahmir Young led Maryland with 20 points, Donta Scott added 19 and Julian Reese had 10 points and 11 rebounds. Maryland was 18-53 from the field for 34%, 5-22 from three-point range for 22% and 25-29 from the free throw line for 86%. There were 5 ties and 4 lead changes in the game. Maryland outscored Indiana 26-23 in the second half.

#4 Indiana Women’s Basketball travels to Minnesota No. 4 Indiana will play its next three of four games on the road as it travels to Minnesota tonight. Tipoff at Williams Arena is set for 8pm on Big Ten Network Plus. Senior forward Mackenize Holmes and freshman guard Yarden Garzon swept the Big Ten player of the week awards for the second time this season on Monday. Holmes averaged 24.0 points, 6.7 rebounds while shooting 70 percent while Garzon averaged 14.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.3 steals and shot 56.7 percent from the floor and 55.6 percent from the 3-point line.
Indiana moved up two spots to No. 4 in the Associated Pres Week 14 poll on Monday, which matches its best-ever ranking in the media poll. With the win over Rutgers on Sunday, IU secured its eight-straight 20-win season. It’s the longest such streak in school history and is the earliest it has secured 20 wins. Overall, the program has 14 20-win seasons in its 51 years. The Hoosiers picked up three wins last week, extending its overall win streak to eight in victories over a pair of ranked opponents.  In the all-time series, Minnesota is ahead slightly, 37-35, but Indiana has won the last eight of nine in meetings dating back to the 2015-16 season. This will be a homecoming for Freshman Lilly Meister and Senior Sara Scalia as they return to their home state. Meister played at John Marshall HS in Rochester while Scalia played three seasons for the Golden Gophers before transferring to IU and played her HS ball at Stillwater High School in Stillwater Minnesota.

Minnesota has lost six of its last seven heading into tonight’s matchup. Freshman guard Maura Braun averages a team-high 14.8 points per game while sophomore forward Alanna Micheaux adds 14.3 points and a team-high 8.2 rebounds. Freshman forward Mallory Heyer is also averages double figures with 11.6 per game and 6.7 boards per outing. Head Coach Lindsay Whalen is in her 5th season as head coach with a 69-69 record. Whalen scored 2,285 points at Minnesota from 2000-2004. She Played in the WNBA from 2004-2018 winning 4 WNBA Championships with the Minnesota Lynx and a 5-time WNBA All Star along. She won 2 gold medals for the United States at 2012 and 2016 Olympics.

Trayce Jackson Davis named to the John R Wooden late season top 20 watch list Indiana senior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis was among a group of 20 student-athletes selected to the John R. Wooden Award® presented by Wendy’s® Late Season Top 20 Watch List Monday on ESPN2. Chosen by a poll of national college basketball experts based on their performances during the 2022-23 season thus far, the list comprises of 20 student-athletes who are front-runners for the sport’s most prestigious honor.
 
The National Ballot consists of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the Wooden Award. Nearly 1,000 voters will rank in order 10 of those 15 players when voting opens prior to the NCAA Tournament and will allow voters to take into consideration performance during early round games. The Wooden Award All American Team™ will be announced the week of the “Elite Eight” round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the 2023 John R. Wooden Award will be presented by Wendy’s following the NCAA Tournament in April.
 
Jackson-Davis paces the Hoosiers with 19.6 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 3.2 blocks per game this season. He is shooting 58.6% (140-of-239) from the floor. Since being named to the Midseason Top 25 Watch List on Jan. 4, Jackson-Davis is averaging 23.6 points, 13.9 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 3.8 blocks per game. The Hoosiers have ripped off five-straight Big Ten wins for the first time since the 2015-16 season. Jackson-Davis currently sits eighth all-time at IU in scoring (1,941), fourth in rebounds (990), and holds the school record for blocked shots (235). He is one of two players (Alan Henderson) to be top-10 all-time in career scoring, rebounding, and blocks in IU men’s basketball history.
 
The Center Grove product is the only active men’s Division I player to tally at least 1,900 career points, 950 career rebounds, and 225 career blocks. In the last 25 seasons, only 12 players have achieved those numbers in college basketball. Jackson-Davis is one of two high-major players (Zach Edey; Purdue) to average at least 19.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game this season. In the last 30 seasons of Division, I men’s college basketball, Jackson-Davis and NBA Hall of Famer Tim Duncan are the only players to average at least 19.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game. Jackson-Davis is tied for fifth in the NCAA with 42 career double-doubles. He posted Indiana’s third ever triple-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists in an 81-65 victory over Nebraska on Dec. 7, 2022.

IUWBB named USBWA national team of the week The No. 4 Indiana Hoosiers have been named the United States Basketball Writers Association Team of the Week following three wins in Big Ten action last week. The Hoosiers picked up wins over No. 13/16 Michigan and No. 2/5 Ohio State and defeated Rutgers to close out the week and improved to 20-1, 10-1 B1G. Senior forward Mackenize Holmes was named the ESPN Player of the Week and Big Ten Player of the Week while freshman guard Yarden Garzon picked up Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors. It’s part of an effort that helped Indiana extend its win streak this season to eight and its 15th straight home victory, the fifth-longest active win streak in the nation.
 
In the 92-83 victory in Ann Arbor, Indiana put five players in double figures led by Holmes’ double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds and senior guard Sara Scalia added 19 points off the bench. Picking up its first win over a Top 2 opponent on Thursday night against the Buckeyes, Holmes and Garzon each put up 20-point efforts as IU was helped by a big third quarter. Garzon notched her first double-double with a season-high 10 rebounds as junior guard Sydney Parrish added another double-double with 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds to defeat Ohio State, 78-65. Indiana closed out the week by shooting a season-high 62.7 percent from the floor in the win 91-68 win over Rutgers, its largest win in the series between the two teams. Graduate student guard Grace Berger and Holmes each pitched in 21 points while Garzon added four triples.

Indiana Pacer players Benedict Mathurin and Andrew Nembhard selected for the NBA Rising Stars game Indiana Pacers rookies Bennedict Mathurin and Andrew Nembhard were selected by NBA Assistant Coaches to participate in the 2023 All-Star Jordan Rising Stars game on Friday, February 17 during All-Star Weekend in Salt Lake City Utah. This year’s Jordan Rising Stars game will feature a mini-tournament format during All-Star weekend in Salt Lake City. Like last year’s event, the Rising Stars game will feature three games between four teams of rookies, sophomores, and players from NBA G League Ignite. The game will be televised nationally by TNT at 9:00pm ET.

Mathurin, a leading candidate for both NBA Rookie of the Year and NBA Sixth Man of the Year, leads the league with 843 points off the bench this season, which is also a Pacers record for a rookie. He currently ranks second among qualified rookies in points per game (17.9), 10th in rebounds per game (4.2), fourth in field goal percentage (42.6%), and first in free throw percentage (82.3%).

Nembhard, selected with the 31st pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, is currently the only qualified rookie who is averaging at least 4.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game – which ranks him second in both categories. Additionally, he ranks first among qualified rookies in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.3-to-1), ninth in points per game (8.5), fourth in three-point field goal percentage (34.3%). Mathurin and Nembhard are also two of only three rookies this season who have recorded at least 31 points in a game.
