Indiana University Men’s Basketball Signee Jakai Newton scores 19 points on ESPNU 2023 Indiana University Men’s Basketball Commit Jakai Netwon scored 19 points for his Newton HS Rams in Covington Georgia Monday Night in a 79-60 loss to the Wheeler Wildcats from Marrietta Georgia in a Nationally televised game on ESPNU Monday Night at Wheeler HS. The two teams are Class 7A which is highest classafcation in Georgia and could meet in the State Tournament. Newton played in just his second game this season after offseason knee surgery. Newton is on a 12-minute restriction. In his first game back, he scored 12 points in a 65-55 win over Archer HS. This game he showed his athleticism and still getting back into game mode but made one of the best plays of the game with a big block that led to a transition basket. Newton can get to the basket, hit midrange shots and plays solid defense.
Stephon Castle who has signed with Connecticut scored 22 points and pulled down 5 rebounds and he and Newton combined for 41 of the Rams 60 points just getting points from three other teammates while other six players who played did not score. Isaiah Collier led Wheeler with 27 points and teammate Arrinten Page scored 17 points, and both are headed to USC. The Wildcats and Rams traded baskets for the first few minutes of the third quarter. But Wheeler seemingly took the quarter over. Collier put together a string of buckets to increase his team’s lead 59-43. The Rams kept battling. Castle seemed destined to will his team to victory. He scored nine of his final 22 points in the fourth quarter along with a few rebounds. The 5-star’s effort wasn’t enough to overcome the Wildcats. Turnovers missed shots and being one step behind on defense ultimately decided the Rams’ fate. Wheeler continued to pour on down the stretch with three-pointers and dunks that continued to get fans on their feet.
All throughout the first 16 minutes of action, there were some intense moments. For instance, at the 3:30 mark, Castle and another Wheeler player got tangled up following a play. Both players shared some words, there was a push then the referee rushed in to issue a technical foul to each player. The situation occurred right in front of Wheeler’s rowdy student section, which seemed to be on top of the Rams in the first half. It wasn’t necessarily a true home-court advantage for the Wildcats. Newton brought a good amount of fans with them on the 50-plus mile trip. Principal Dr. Shannon Buff, Athletic Director Vincent Byams and other school officials were present. Even Newton County Schools’ superintendent Samantha Fuhrey and board chair Shakila Henderson-Baker were cheering on the Rams. Their cheers, however, were drowned out by the numerous students the school brought.

IHSAA Boys Basketball Sectional moving from Southridge to Washington due to lack of Wheelchair access to the floor The Indiana high school boy’s basketball state tournament begins in three weeks. One sectional in Southwestern Indiana is requiring a location change. Southridge High School announced Monday it will not host the Class 3A sectional next month because it lacks the ability to provide wheelchair access to the floor. The gymnasium, built in 1951, is ADA compliant, but a sectional member school notified Southridge in January it would need access to the floor. The Southwest Dubois County School Corporation attempted to find solutions for new accommodations but none that were ADA-compliant could be installed before the postseason opens. The sectional is scheduled to run from Feb. 28 until March 4.
So, the sectional this year will move to The Hatchet House at Washington High School and will return to Southridge in 2024. The school said it will still host the Class 2A regional scheduled for March 11. The schools competing in Sectional 31 are Heritage Hills, North Daviess, Pike Central, Princeton Community, Southridge, Vincennes Lincoln and Washington.
