#2 Indiana Women’s Basketball clinches first Big Ten Title since 1983 in front of sold-out crowd The #2 Indiana Hoosiers beat their instate rivals the Purdue Boilermakers 83-60 in front of a sold-out crowd of 17,222 in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall Sunday afternoon which the first time in school history an IU women’s basketball home game has been sold out and break’s the attendance record set earlier this month of 13 046 against Iowa. The Hoosiers are 26-1 overall and 16-1 in the Big Ten and have a share of the Big Ten Championship for the first time since 1983 which is the schools only other Big Ten Regular season title in program history. The Hoosiers 16 wins in Big Ten play is most in school history. The 1983 team went 15-3 in the inaugural season of Big Ten Women’s Basketball which was honored during the game which was the 40th anniversary of that championship team along with players that were in attendance that represented all decades of Indiana Women’s Basketball over the 50 years that the program has been around. “That 1983 team has always supported us and they are down in the locker room signing the State of Indiana board and we are thankful to be able to celebrate this with them” Head Coach Teri Moren said after the game.

The Starting five for the Hoosiers all scored double figures with Mackenzie Holmes leading the way with 20 points on 10-11 shooting and 7 rebounds, Senior Grace Berger had a double-double on her senior day with 14 points and 10 assist.  Although she did not want to think about it before the game because it would be sad but after the game, she was able to reflect on what it means. “To go out cutting down the nets and I know were not done yet I couldn’t ask for better ending” Grace Berger said after the game.  Chloe Moore-McNeil scored 14 points and 5 assists. Sydney Parrish a double-double 13 points and 10 rebounds. Parrish accomplished something she was not able to do when she played at Oregon and that is cut down the nets with the Hoosiers and play in front of her family and made sure to find her parents and grandparents after the game. “I made the right decision to come home and my grandparents are a big reason why I came out and I am sure this hat and piece of the net will wind up in their house and I had it was special to celebrate with them” Parrish said after the game.  Yarden Garzon added 12 points hitting 4 three pointers and pulling down 6 rebounds. Alyssa Geary who is the other senior on the team played 2 minutes pulled down a rebound and got a blocked shot as she missed her only field goal attempt. Sara Scalia scored 6 points. Lexus Bargesser and Henna Sandvik scored 2 points each as all 13 Hoosiers played. Indiana shot 32-60 from the field for 53%, 11-27 from three-point range for 40% and 8-9 from the free throw line for 89%. The Hoosiers pulled down 34 rebounds, dished out 20 assists, 6 blocks, 3 steals and committed 14 turnovers.  

Purdue is 17-8 overall and 8-7 in the Big Ten. The Boilermakers were led in scoring by Lasha Petree with 23 points on 8-13 from the field along with 5-9 from three-point range and 2-4 from the free throw line. Abbey Ellis added 12 points and Jenae Terry added 11 points. Purdue finished the game shooting 23-54 for 42 %, 6-22 from three-point range for 27% and 8-13 from free throw line for 61 %, Purdue pulled down 26 rebounds, 12 assists, 5 steals, 2 blocks and committed 14 turnovers.

The Hoosiers had a fight on their hands for the first half just like the first meeting in West Lafayette. Purdue went toe to toe with the Hoosiers. Indiana led 20-15 after the first quarter. Purdue outscored Indiana 19-17 in the second quarter as Indiana led 37-34 at halftime. Purdue went on a 7-0 run in the final 3:07 of the 2nd quarter as the Boilermakers went 3-3 from the field and held the Hoosiers scoreless for the final Three minutes and 18 seconds of the quarter as the Hoosiers went 0-4 from the field.  In the third quarter Mackenzie Holmes scored on back-to-back layups to lead 41-34 as the Hoosiers outscored the Boilers 27-12 and led 64-49 at the end of the third quarter. The Hoosiers kept control in the fourth quarter leading by as many as 27 at one point and Purdue could get no closer than 21 as the Hoosiers outscored the Boilers 19-14 in the final quarter and cut the nets down after the game as Big Ten Champions and had a senior day celebration.

Indiana will travel to Iowa City on Sunday at 2 pm to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes in the final regular season game. Iowa travels to Maryland Tuesday before hosting Indiana next Sunday and if the Hawkeyes win both games, they will share the Big Ten title with Indiana. 

#14 Indiana Men’s Basketball survives shorthanded Illinois The #14 Indiana Hoosiers held off the Illinois Fighting Illini 71-68 Saturday afternoon in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Indiana is 19-8 overall and 10-6 in the Big Ten as Illinois is 17-9 overall and 8-7 in the Big Ten.  Indiana will travel to Michigan State on Tuesday for another late-night game at 9 pm.  

Trayce Jackson-Davis scored 26 points and pulled down 12 rebounds along with 5 block shots. With 12:13 left in the first half Jackson-Davis scored on a jumper to move into fifth all-time on the IU scoring list passing his head coach Mike Woodson.  “As a player myself I was never about accolades I was blessed to be to score the ball and comparing myself and Trayce neither one of us shot three pointers and I couldn’t be prouder of Trayce and its special and he can’t stop there because we are still fighting for the Big Ten Title” Head Coach Mike Woodson said after the game.  Jalen Hood Schifino had 13 Points, Miller Kopp added 12 points and Race Thompson added 10 points.  The Hoosiers shot 44 % from the field on 29-66 shooting, 5-11 from three-point range for 45% and 8-13 from the free throw line for 61%. Indiana pulled down 41 rebounds, dished 15 assists, 8 steals, 7 blocks and committed 14 turnovers.

The Illini were without leading scorer Terrance Shannon Jr who was out with a concussion. Shannon Jr is averaging 17 points a game. Illinois was led by Matthew Mayer with 24 points and 8 rebounds. Jayden Epps scored 11 points and Dain Dainja scored 10 points. The Fighting Illini were 24-61 from the field for 39%, 6-20 from the three-point line for 30% and 14-18 for 77%. Illinois pulled down 37 rebounds, 9 assists, 9 steals, 9 blocks and committed 11 turnovers. 

This game featured 10 ties and 4 lead changes.  The Hoosiers opened the game with Trayce Jackson-Davis bucket inside before Illinois went on a 4-0 run. Trey Galloway tied the game at 4-4 on a layup. The Hoosiers led 23-22 with 9:29 left in the first half. Matthew Mayer hit the second of back-to-back three pointers as the Illini led 25-23 with 9:10 left as Illinois led by 8 points, 34-26 when Coleman Hawkins threw a dunk over Jackson-Davis and was called for a technical foul for taunting. Tamar Bates hit two free throws and Hoosiers used a 7-0 run to cut the lead down 1 point after Miller Kopp hit a three pointer 34-33 with 3:10 left before half. Illinois went into the locker room up 38-35.

In the second half Illinois led by 9 points on two occasions when Mayer had a dunk with 16:30 left and Jayden Epps hit a three pointer with 12:41 left to lead 48-39. Illinois would have the lead 67-65 on a Coleman Hawkins dunk with 1:28 left. Indiana would tie the game on Jalen Hood-Schifino layup with 1:17 left to tie at 67. Hood Schifino would get fouled and sink two free throws to give the Hoosiers the lead 69-67. With 30 seconds left. Jayden Epps was fouled, and he missed the first free throw and hit the second as the Illini trailed by 1 with 16 seconds left. Illinois was not able to foul Hood-Schifino and he found Trayce Jackson-Davis up ahead for a dunk to give the Hoosiers a three-point lead with 6 seconds left. Illinois had one last chance as RJ Melendez missed a three pointer and the Hoosiers escape with the win and sweep the regular season series.   

After a tough game at Northwestern Wednesday night Miller Kopp bounced back going 4-5 from the three-point line with 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal. Kopp only scored 3 points and had profanity laced chants directed at him by the Northwestern Students after he played there for three seasons before transferring to IU. “That game is over, and it was not fun, but I have incredible support from my teammates, coaches and the administration, it was time to lock into this game and I am glad we able to get the job done”. Kopp Said after the game.

Matt Guerrieri Named Indiana University Football Co-Defensive Coordinator     Indiana University Head Football Coach Tom Allen has named Matt Guerrieri Co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach. Allen and Guerrieri met with the Media Saturday morning in the press room of Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Guerrieri at was Duke University from 2012-21 and was on the staff at Ohio State for the 2022 season as senior advisor and analyst. He was named the defensive coordinator at the University of Tulsa on January 6, but decided that the opportunity to join the Hoosiers was too good to pass up.   Gurrerri was a graduate assistant from 2012-14, safeties coach from 2015-21 and the co-defensive coordinator from 2018-21.  “Who I work with is important I am a relationship guy and it and was a perfect storm and I have known Coach Allen for 10 years and its close to home with my mom being in Cleveland” Coach Guerrieri said.                                                 

Indiana finished 4-8 a season ago and Coach Allen announced that he will hand over the defensive play calling duties to Guerrieri. “It will allow me to be a better head football coach for this team” Allen Said. Guerrieri is excited to get to know his players and it’s about building relationships and trust in any situation to be successful.  “It starts with relationships; I am a firm believer that if you don’t build that relationship then you are not the best version of yourself” Guerrieri said. The Hoosiers have a lot of offseason movement and Guerrieri has been able to watch this team for a week now and he like what he sees in his new team. “I have watched workouts this week and I have been impressed and this is a hungry football team”. 

Guerrieri was one of three finalists for the 2020 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Assistant Coach of the Year, a nominee for the 2018 Broyles Award, and one of 247Sports Top 30 Coaches Under 30 in 2018 and 2019. He mentored All-American Jeremy Cash and five additional all-conference honorees. The 2015 ACC Defensive Player of the Year, Cash also was a finalist for both the Nagurski Trophy (best defensive player in the nation) and the Thorpe Award (top defensive back in the nation). Guerrieri’s 2019 secondary propelled Duke to third in the ACC in pass defense, allowing just 199.0 yards per game, and a top-five finish in pass defense efficiency (123.8).  The 2017 Blue Devils ranked among the conference leaders in opponent pass completion percentage (2nd), scoring defense (3rd), passing defense (3rd), and total defense (4th). They yielded 25-or-fewer points in 11-of-13 contests.  Duke surrendered 20.23 points per game, the program’s lowest total since 1977. Guerrieri took part in the inaugural AFCA 30 Under 30 Coaches Leadership Institute in 2015. Before joining the Blue Devils, Guerrieri spent 2011 as a defensive graduate assistant at Lenoir-Rhyne University, where he helped coach the secondary and the outside linebackers. A three-year letterman at Davidson College, Guerrieri started at safety for the Wildcats. He was a senior captain anda three-time All-Pioneer Football League Honor Roll selection. Guerrieri graduated from Davidson in 2011 with a degree in sociology. He earned his master’s degree in Christian studies from Duke in 2014. 

Bloomington North Boys Swimming wins sectional title Bloomington North won the Boys Swimming Sectional Championship Saturday at East Central High School in St Leon Indiana near the Indiana-Ohio State line. The Cougars scored 415 Points, Bloomington South was second with 368 Points and Edgewood finished 13th with 16 points. The Bloomington Schools won 9 of the 12 events. Bloomington North won 4 individual events and all three relays while Bloomington South won 2 individual events. Bloomington North Sophomore James Stewart won the 100-yard Butterfly Junior Benjmain Dixon won the 100 and 200-yard freestyle Senior Max Miller won the 1-meter diving, The Cougars won the 200 Medley Relay 200, and 400 freestyle relays. Bloomington South Junior David Kovacs won the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard Indvidual Medley. Edgewood Senior Quinn Balcam finished 3rd and Bloomington South Senior Michael Tierney finished 4th to advance to the Diving Regional at Jasper HS tomorrow night.

Bloomington South finishes 8th place at Wrestling State Finals The Bloomington South Panthers finished in 8th place at the IHSAA wrestling state finals at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis this weekend. The Panthers had two wrestlers competing and they finished second and fourth place in their weight respective weight classes. Crown Point won the State title with 167 Points. In the 106 Pound weight class Bloomington South Sophomore Cameron Meier beat Fort Wayne Snider Sophomore Juliana Ocampo by a 5-0 decision beat Freshman Logan Haney of Crown Point via pinfall at 3:43 Meier lost to Avon Freshman Nathan Rioux in the semifinals 2-0 and lost to Delta Sophomore Ayden Bollinger by Majority Decision 14-6 to finish fourth in the state meet. in the 170 Pound weight class Bloomington South Senior Delaney Ruhlman beat Columbia City Senior Tanner Reed via Fall in 25 Seconds. Beat Hobart Sophomore Aidan Costello 7-5 decision Warren Central Junior Anthony Cashman II lost to Crown Point Senior Cody Goodwin in the Championship 2-1 finishing runner up for the third year in a row. Rulhman becomes the third Westler from Bloomington to appear in three state championship matches joining Partick Cassidy from Bloomington North 1993-95 and the first Bloomington South Panther since Randy May since 1974-76.
