House passes State Representative Hall’s bill to add personal financial literacy curriculum for high school students
Indiana House lawmakers recently voted to advance State Rep. Dave Hall’s (R-Norman) legislation that would require high school students to demonstrate proficiency in personal financial literacy in order to graduate. The proposed legislation would task the State Board of Education with adopting a personal finance curriculum for students in public or charter schools beginning with the Class of 2027. These lessons could be a separate course or incorporated into an appropriate subject like math.

Hall’s bill would also allow a personal financial responsibility course to qualify as a math credit for Hoosiers earning an alternative diploma. Concepts that would be taught in the personal financial literacy curriculum include spending and saving, managing bank accounts, debt management, and loan applications.

House Bill 1281 now moves to the Indiana Senate for consideration. Watch session and committees live, and view legislation at iga.in.gov.
