#17 Indiana Men’s Basketball knocks off #5 Purdue to sweep the season series for the first time since 2013 The #17 Indiana Hoosiers Men’s Basketball Team knocked off the #5 Purdue Boilermakers 79-71 before a sold-out crowd at Mackey Arena Saturday Night in West Lafayette. It’s the first time since 2013 The Hoosiers have won in Mackey and the first time since 2013, they have swept the season series against its archrivals.

Jalen Hood Schifino scored a career high 35 points, Guard Trey Galloway added 13 points, five assists, four rebounds, and stifling defense on Boiler guard Braden Smith. Miller Kopp added 13 points. Hoosiers had a ruthless combination of efficient offense (51% shooting, 16 assists) and stifling defense to improve to 20-10 overall, 11-7 in the Big Ten. With Trayce Jackson-Davis struggling (although he still finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists), Hood-Schifino set an instant tone, fearlessly attacking the Boilers and the moment.

Only Jay Edwards, with 36 points against Minnesota in 1988, scored more points as an IU freshman. The only Hoosiers to score more in a road game are Alan Henderson (41 at Michigan State), Bracey Wright (39 at North Texas), Steve Alford (38 at Wisconsin), Damon Bailey (36 at Kansas) and Edwards. Hood-Schifino, who topped the 33 points he had against Northwestern in January, continues to grow in the absence of injured senior guard Xavier Johnson. He added seven rebounds and two assists and played solid defense. IU hit Purdue with every available option and thrived. It forced turnovers, flustered shooters, and attacked relentlessly. In seven minutes, a four-point halftime deficit became a 10-point second-half advantage, and then grew. Coach Mike Woodson was 0-4 as player in Mackey Arena and gets his first win as coach.

Purdue (24-5, 13-5) could have clinched a share of the Big Ten title with a victory. Now, with four losses in its last six games, it has to sweat. Zach Edey scored 26 points and 16 rebounds to lead Purdue. The Boilers couldn’t do what Michigan State had done four days earlier in beating IU — light up the gym with 3-pointers. They finished 5-for-23 beyond the arc, not nearly good enough against IU’s 7-for-15, and compounded that with 35 percent overall shooting, and 22-for-33 free throw shooting. Purdue opened the game by making five of its first nine shots to surge ahead 13-6. Five straight Kopp points, and a Hood-Schifino 3-pointer got IU to within one at 19-18 at the 10:33 mark without Jackson-Davis taking a shot or scoring a point. Hood-Schifino kept attacking and scoring. Kopp got free for a 3-pointer and a 30-30 tie with 4:30 left in the half. Free throws pushed Purdue back in front until a Newman 3-pointer gave the Boilers a 38-34 halftime lead. Purdue’s 26-11 rebounding edge could have helped deliver a knockout blow. It did not. The Boilers only managed a 10-3 second-chance points advantage. The Hoosiers were very much in contention. Eight Galloway points sparked IU’s 12-2 start of the second half for a 46-40 Hoosier lead that kept growing. Kopp hit a 3-pointer. Race Thompson dunked for the second time. The lead was nine, then 10, and the reeling Boilers called a timeout. It didn’t matter. A Hood-Schifino jumper pushed Indiana ahead 65-52 with 8:36 left. The Hoosiers matched every Boiler surge the rest of the way.

After graduate student guard Grace Berger hit her signature jumper, Iowa went on a run forcing an Indiana timeout trailing 10-2 with just over two minutes in. The Hawkeyes led by as many as 13 in the opening frame as the Hoosiers began to chip away at the deficit. A bucket from Berger and a triple from freshman guard Yarden Garzon made it a 21-15 as Indiana came within as many as three on an and-1 opportunity by Holmes. Facing a five-point deficit going into the second, junior guard Sydney Parrish started the Hoosiers off attacking the rim while a smooth triple from Scalia kept IU within three. Moore-McNeil pulled the Hoosiers within one with 6:20 to play on a baseline drive, 30-29. An 8-0 run ensued for the Hoosiers in a two minute and change span, as Berger’s signature jumper gave Indiana the lead back, 37-36. It was short lived as Iowa scored on the next possession but got two at the line from Garzon to take a 39-38 lead. With just five ticks on the clock before the break, the Hawkeyes would score and take a 40-39 lead at the half.

Iowa stretched its lead to seven in the early goings of the third quarter and a lead it mostly maintained. Moore-McNeil connected on her second triple of the day as IU closed the gap on a 5-0 run with 22 seconds left. Iowa stepped to the line to make two in the final seconds of the third, taking a 61-58 lead. The Hoosiers kept pressuring the Hawkeyes in the fourth, as Holmes got fouled on the way up with 2:17 left on the clock as she hit one in the bonus to tie the game at 79-all. Buckets were traded by the two teams on the following possessions as Indiana would end up in the bonus with 34 seconds remaining to send Moore-McNeil to a line for a pair. Off a missed opportunity by Iowa, Holmes came down and got herself to the line again on a move inside with 1.5 remaining. She would give her team the 85-83 lead as Iowa used the timeout to advance the ball in to its own half court. Iowa would then go on to hit the buzzer beating three in the final 1.5 seconds.
