Indiana Cutters Head to Jeffersonville to Take on Kentuckiana Calvary

The Indiana Cutters will hit the road tomorrow for a key Battle Ground Football League matchup with the Kentuckiana Calvary at the Woehrle Athletic Complex at 5:30 PM in Jeffersonville Indiana. The Cutters are coming off 18-16 win against the Indiana Tornados at home and are 4-2 on the season. Marquise Holt scored the game winning touchdown with no time left to seal the victory. Sidney Moore threw two touchdown passes to Torrell Williamson and Andrew Franklin in what will go down as an instant classic.  The Calvary are 3-2 and had their game last week against the Elkhart Panthers postponed. Playoff Seeding is on the line in South Division with the Cutters and Tornados sitting at 4-2 and the Calvary 3-2 with an extra game to make up.  The Kentucky Cardinals are 3-2 and Quad City Titans 1-4 and will have a game to make up because their game against each other was postponed. The top two teams in the South will host semifinal games with the playoffs starting in August.  The Cutters and the Calvary have a history dating back to 2016. The Calvary have won the last three meetings in this series and the Cutters will be looking to win in Jeffersonville for the first time since 2017.

Indiana Baseball Signee Colson Montgomery Signs with Chicago White Sox

Indiana University Baseball Signee Colson Montgomery has signed his contract with the Chicago White Sox and will forgo college baseball. Montgomery was drafted 22nd overall by the Chicago White Sox in the first round of the Major League Baseball Draft July 11th.   Montgomery’s contract will be $ 3,027.000 which is the full value for the 22nd pick in the draft. Montgomery played at Southridge HS in Huntingburg Indiana.  The 6-4 Shortstop led Southridge to the Class 2A State Championship and they were runner up in 2019. Montgomery batted .333 with team high 7 Home runs, 17 Extra Base Hits and 42 Runs. He was walked 39 times with 11 intentional walks and two of those game in the state championship games. Montgomery was standout in football and basketball while at Southridge.

Bloomington South Graduate Joe Weiler Wins US Amateur Golf Qualifier

Bloomington South Graduate and Purdue Senior Joe Weiler won the US Golf Amateur Qualifier in Chesterton Indiana. Weiler won by 5 strokes at the Sand Creek Country Club in Chesterton. Weiler opened with a seven under 65 to share the lead and pulled away with a second round 69 in the 36 holes in one day format. The US Amateur will be held August 9th-15th at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.  Weiler made the Junior Amatuer golf tournament during his high school days at Bloomington South.

Team USA Beats Jen Gilbert and Team Canada 1-0 In Olympic Softball

Team USA is 2-0 after 1-0 win over Canada in the 2nd game of the Olympic Softball Tournament in Japan Thursday. The Americans scored in the top of the 5th inning and that was all they needed to hold off the Canadians. Monica Abbott who played at the University of Tennessee allowed just 1 hit, 3 walks 9 strikeouts on 102 pitches. The USA had 7 hits and will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 PM local time against Mexico. Ball State Graduate Jen Gilbert was 0-1 at the plate as she filed out to right field and walked her 2nd time up. Gilbert who graduated from Ball State in 2014 is 0-3 with 2 walks and has started in right field in both games at the Olympics. Canada is 1-1 and will play Australia tomorrow morning at 10 AM Local Time. Japan beat Mexico 3-2 and Australia beat Italy 1-0 on Day 2 of Action. The Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics is this evening.
