Jessica Parratto Wins Silver Medal in Platform Diving at Tokyo Olympics
2019 Indiana University Graduate Jessica Parratto and her partner Delaney Schnell of Arizona took home the Sliver Medal in the 10 Meter Women’s Synchro Platform Diving Event at the Tokyo Olympics Tuesday. Parratto and Schnell finished with a score of 310:80, China took home the gold medal with a score of 363.78 and Mexico took the Bronze with a score of 299.70. Parratto is 27 years old from Dover New Hampshire and is in her 2nd Olympics. 5 years ago in Rio, Parratto finished 10th in the 10-meter individual platform and was 7th in the 10-meter synchro platform with then partner Amy Cozad who is also and IU graduate. IU Diving coach Drew Johansen is head coach for the United States for 3rd straight Olympics.
Lilly King Wins Bronze Medal In 100 Meter Breaststroke at Tokyo Olympics
2019 Indiana University Graduate Lilly King won the Bronze Medal in the Women’s 100 Meter Breaststroke at the Tokyo Olympics Tuesday. King an Evansville Reitz HS graduate had a time 1:05.54 and this was the first time she had lost a 100-meter breaststroke final since December 2016. King won this event in the 2016 Rio Olympics with an Olympic Record time of 1:04.93 and was the favorite going into this final because of her long winning streak. Lydia Jacoby of Seward Alaska pulled the upset winning the Gold Medal with a time of 1:05.22. The 17-year-old is the first swimmer from the state of Alaska to be on the Olympic team and he becomes the 3rd youngest American female to collect a Gold Medal in the last 20 years joining Missy Franklin and Katie Ledecky. Jacoby is just the 10th Olympian all time from Alaska. Tatjana Schoemaker of South Africa won the Sliver with a time of 1:05.22. King will swim in the 200 Meter Breaststroke Heats this evening. Several Indiana University Athletes competed Tuesday, Marwan Elkamash of Egypt finished 16th overall in the 800 Meter Freestyle Heats with a time of 7:52.76 and Current IU Swimmer Michael Brinegar of Columbus finished 17th with a time of 7:53.00, neither will advance to the final. Zach Apple qualifies for the 100 freestyle semifinals with a time 48:16 which is 11th overall. Blake Peroni swam the 2nd leg for 4×200 Relay as the United States finished 5th overall with a time of 4:05.62 will advance to the final. Sweden beat New Zealand 2-0 in Women’s Soccer in final group play game. IU Sophomore Gabi Rennie Played 5 minutes for New Zealand who finished 0-3 and will not advance to the quarterfinals. Rennie played a total of 17 Minutes in 3 games with 1 Goal coming as substitute in stoppage time in the first game against Australia.
Canada beats Mexico 3-2 to win The Bronze Medal in Softball
Team Canada beat Mexico 3-2 to win the Bronze Medal in Softball at the Tokyo Olympics Tuesday. 2014 Ball State graduate Jen Gilbert did not play in this game for Canada. Gilbert started in right field in 4 of the 6 games and came in a substitute against Japan. She struggled at the plate going 1-10 with 2 walks and her only hit was a solo Home Run against Italy in the final pool play game. The 6-0 Gilbert was born in Saskatoon Saskatchewan and grew up in Texas. This is her first Olympic appearance for her native Canada and played at Ball State from 2011-14. This was the first time since the 2008 Olympics that Softball has been included. Canada wins a Medal for the first time in softball they finished 4th in the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
Indiana University Grad Jorge Campillo Added to Spain Olympic Golf Roster
2009 Indiana University Graduate Jorge Campillo has been added to Spain’s Olympic Golf Roster for the Tokyo Olympics. Campillo replaces Jon Rham who withdrew from the team due a positive COVID-19 test. This is Campillo’s first trip to the Olympics and becomes the 16th current or former Indiana University Athlete from seven different countries to compete in the Tokyo Olympics. Campillo won nine individual titles including the 2008 Big Ten Championship and was NCAA runner up that same year and played for the Hoosiers from 2005-2009. Campillo was Golfweek first team all American and represented Europe in the Palmer Cup from 2007-2009. Campillo plays on the European Tour and has won 2 events one in 2019 and the other 2020. The 35-year-old Native of Caceres Spain will begin play at the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday Morning 7:30 AM local time
