10th Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Held This Evening

The 10th class for the Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame will be inducted this evening at Monroe Convention Center in Downtown Bloomington. The Night starts at 5 PM with a meet and greet that is open to the public. There will be a reception from 6-6:45 PM followed by dinner at 6:45 PM and Awards will take place at 7:30 PM.  Six Athletes will be inducted, Robert Boltinghouse who was one of the best running back’s out of Edgewood HS. Kent Deford who played baseball at Edgewood and went on to Indiana University and was named Team MVP in 1970. Duany Dunay who was the county’s all-time leading scorer in Boys Basketball when he graduated and 1995 Indiana All Star, was member of 2000 final four team at Wisconsin. Kueth Duany led Bloomington North to the 1997 Boys Basketball State Championship which was the last single class state title in Indiana, was a 1998 Indiana All Star and won National Championship with Syracuse in 2003. The Duany’s will be the first set of siblings inducted at the same time. Amanda Warthan-Clark who won the 1993 Mental attitude Award in Cross County at Bloomington North and Her father Charlie and Older Sister Jennifer are already in the hall of fame. Charlie Warthan was inducted 2015 for an outstanding career as track and cross-country coach at Bloomington North. Sister Jennifer was inducted in 2017 and won the State title and mental attitude award in 1991. Rusty Fishel played Basketball at University and Bloomington North HS. Fishel was leading scorer in the 1972 University Team that won just the 2nd boys’ basketball sectional title in school history before it closed down and was consolidated in Bloomington North the next year. Two Coaches will be inducted Bo Henry longtime wrestling coach at Bloomington North for three decades won the 1977 State Wrestling title and had 11 Individual State Champions. Mo Mortiary who coached football at Bloomington South won 2 state championships in 1993 and 1998, Came Back to South in 2013 and won 6 straight sectionals. John Harrell goes in as contributor. The Humanitarian award goes to Joe Smith who has been the voice of Monroe County High School Sports for over 50 years and also a part of the Indiana University Football and Basketball radio broadcast. The Event will also honor one male and female athlete from Bloomington North, Bloomington South and Edgewood High Schools with a $ 1,000 Scholarship award. This class along with the 10-person pioneer class will get there moment in sun after not being able to have the ceremony last year due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Cody Zeller Signs One Year Contract with Portland Trail Blazers

Former Indiana University Men’s Basketball player Cody Zeller has signed a one-year contract with the Portland Trail Blazers. Zeller has played for the Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets since 2013 and was free agent this offseason. Zeller has played 467 career games and started 273 averaging 22.7 minutes per game and scoring 8.8 points per game. Zeller was named 2011 Indiana Mr. Basketball out of Washington High School and won three state championships. He Played at IU from 2011-13 and was taken fourth overall in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets. Zeller got his degree from IU in May of 2017 in the Kelley School of Business. 

Indiana University Women’s Golfer Valerie Clancy Wins Scratch Cup Individual Title 

Indiana University Women’s Golf rising Junior Valerie Clancy won 49th Hermitage Ladies Scratch Cup in Dublin Ireland. This is the longest running scratch cup in the country. Clancy is from Mitchelstown Ireland. She won the tournament by seven strokes and was the only golfer to shoot under par in both rounds. Clancy shot a 70 on day 1 and 68 on day 2 and was only golfer to turn in a scorecard under 70 in the tournament. Clancy completed in all 18 rounds for the Hoosiers as Sophomore, averaged a score of 78.67 and finished 20th overall at the Big Ten Championship.

Shae La Roche Scores 2 Goals as Australia beats Canada in Shootout

2014 Indiana University Graduate Shae (Fournier) La Roche scored 2 more goals as Canada fell to Australia 14-12 in Penalty Shootout in the consolation semifinals in Women’s Water Polo at the Tokyo Olympics. La Roche scored the first goal of the game with 7:34 left to go in the first quarter and Canada took a 3-2 lead when she scored her 2nd goal with 2:12 before halftime. La Roche has started all six games and scored 9 goals at the Olympics. La Roche has had multiple goal games against South Africa, Spain United States Australia. La Roche scored her other goal against the Netherlands and did not score in the first meeting against Australia July 24th.  The Game was tied 10-10 going to the penalty shootout with Australia outscoring Canada 4-2 and La Roche was not involved in the shootout. Canada will play China in the 7th place game 9:30 AM Saturday Morning local time. China fell to the Netherlands 13-6 in the other consolation semifinal.
