Indiana House and Senate both working to provide funding for online students
Indiana Senate Bill 2 and Indiana House Bill 1003 are working through committee targeting education funding; specifically addressing equity for counting students who are learning virtually, due to the Covid-19 concerns. The legislation is being fast-tracked, to address immediate funding concerns. The attention is required because of an existing state law designed to limit funding for schools which are perennially dedicated to virtual learning. The new legislation is anticipated to award funding credit for students are currently studying online but were not a virtual learner prior to the declared health emergency.
Indiana Daily Student in financial trouble
According to an editorial published in the Indiana Daily Student, they are “on track to run out of money by May.” The two current co-editors in-chief issued the warning in yesterday’s IDS, stating that they wish to be transparent about the grim situation. The campus paper has been a staple of the community for over 150 years, and is tied to Indiana University; however, they are financially independent, creating revenue from advertising and donations. Those sources of funding have been reduced significantly in 2020. According to the article, Professional Staff salaries, printing costs and Student pay comes to $327,603.05 per semester.
School Bus run off the road
The Dubois County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an accident involving a Southeast Dubois County School bus, which occurred while students were on the bus. Police are seeking the driver of an older model, blue Chevrolet regular cab pickup, reported to have forced the bus into a ditch. Thankfully, no one was injured during the incident. Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 812-482-3522.
