10th Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame Class Inducted After a Long Wait  

The 10th Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame Class was inducted Last Friday night at the Monroe Convention Center with over two hundred in attendance. For this 10th class the wait was well worth with as they were to be inducted last summer but the banquet was canceled by the COVID-19 Pandemic were selected by the board of directors at the end of 2019. Normally held the second Friday in July this banquet was delayed a month due attendance restriction. The First set of siblings inducted at the same time Bloomington North Basketball stars Dunay Dunay and younger brother Kueth were unable to attend due their ongoing humanitarian work in their native South Sudan. 1994 Bloomington North Graduate Amanda Warthan-Clark who won 1993 State Championship in 3200 Meters for Bloomington North Joins her father Charlie and older sister Jennifer as hall of famers. 1998 Edgewood Grad Robert Boltinghouse played football and track and is now the principal at Owen Valley HS. Kent Deford 1967 graduate of Edgewood HS played and was the Head Coach of the Mustangs from 1972-1982 winning 120 games and four conference titles. Rusty Fishel who started at University and Graduated from Bloomington North in 1974 went on to play Indiana University in Football. Bloomington North Wrestling Coach Bo Henry who led Bloomington North to the 1977 State wrestling championship and coached his so Bo Henry Jr from 1994-97. Bloomington South Football Coach Mo Moriarty won two Class 4A State Championships in 1993 and 1998. Contributor John Harrell who created JohnHarrell.net for site devoted to Indiana High School Basketball and Football known in every one of Indiana’s 92 counties. Joe Smith the longtime broadcaster for High School Sports in Monroe County and IU Men’s Basketball and Football. There was 10-person pioneer class that was honored with a plaque that is located in Fountain Square Mall in Downtown Bloomington. William Lowe Bryan, James Harold “Bat” Burress Jr, Preston Eagleson, Jane Fooddrill, Harlan Logan, Juliette “Martha” Maxwell, Chauncey McDaniel, Pauline Siebenthal, Phil Talbot and Sarkes Tarzian. One Female and Male Athlete from each of the three Monroe County High Schools were honored with $ 1,000 scholarship. Those winners are Amiyah Davis Track and Soccer along with Maddix Blackwell Football, Baseball and Basketball from Bloomington South. Taylor Mnnick Softball and Basketball along with Coleman Sater Basketball and Baseball from Edgewood. Olivia Kasier Track and Cross Country along with Aaron Steinfeldt Football Basketball and Baseball from Bloomington North. The Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame was founded May 11th 2009 and inducted its first class in 2011. The 13-member board has given out athletic scholarships to one Male and Female Athlete from Bloomington North, Bloomington South and Edgewood High Schools since 2011.      

Shae La Roche Ends Tokyo Olympics with a Goal and Win Over China

2014 Indiana University Graduate Shae (Fournier) La Roche scored a goal as Canada beat China 16-7 in the 7th place game of the Women’s Water Polo tournament at the Tokyo Olympics. La Roche scored with 6:13 to before halftime to make 7-4. La Roche started every game in Tokyo and scored 10 goals in 7 games. She had four multiple goal games against Spain, South Africa, The United States and Australia and scored in goal in games against the Netherlands and China. La Roche did not score in opener in the first meeting against Australia.

Victor Oladipo Re-Signs with Miami Heat

Former Indiana University Men’s Basketball Player Victor Oladipo has re-signed with the Miami Heat. Oladipo had season ending knee surgery on his right knee on May 13th and will continue his rehab. Oladipo has appeared in 454 regular season games with 394 starts during his eight-year NBA Career and has averaged 17.5 points, 4.6 Rebounds, 4.0 Assists, 1.64 Steals and 33 Minutes Per Game. Oladipo played at Indiana University from 2010-2013 and was 2nd pick overall in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic. Oladipo played for the Indiana Pacers from 2017-2021 before being traded to the Houston Rockets on January 17th and then to the Miami Heat on March 25th.

Indiana Natives Skylar Diggins Smith and Annie Drews Win Gold on Final Day of Tokyo Olympics

The United States beat Japan 90-75 in the Gold Medal Game of Women’s Basketball at the Tokyo Olympics. South Bend Washington and Norte Dame Grad Skylar Diggins-Smith played 1 minute and did not score and Norte Dame Graduate Jewell Loyd scored 3 points in 11 minutes off the bench. The Americans have won seven straight gold medals and have a 55-game winning streak in Olympic play. The United States Women’s Volleyball team beat Brazil 3-0 in the Gold Medal Game.  2015 Purdue University and Penn HS Grad Annie Drews contributed 14 kills and 1 block in the win over Brazil. Drews was the team’s leading scorer in the semifinal match against Serbia. Drews who played at Purdue from 2012-2015 is the first Purdue grad to win a gold medal since David Boudia won the 10 Meter Platform Diving event in the 2012 London Olympics. The United States won 39 Gold Medals which was one better than China. The Red, White and Blue took home 113 medals total, 41 Sliver and 33 Bronze. China was second with 88 total medals followed by the Russian Olympic Committee with 71, Great Britain with 68 and Host Japan with 58 total medals to round out the top five.
