Indiana University Men’s Basketball travels to Maryland
#21 Indiana University continues its 123rd season of competition in men’s basketball with a key road contest against the Maryland Terrapins tonight. Tip is scheduled for 9pm from the XFinity Center. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2. Indiana used a 15-0 run to close out the first half to bury Ohio State by a score of 86-70 on Saturday night. The win marked the fifth straight for the Hoosiers in Big Ten Conference play. Freshman guard Jalen Hood-Schifino canned a career-high six 3-pointers in a 24-point, 3-assist, and 2-steal performance against the Buckeyes. Two more freshman, forward Malik Reneau and forward Kaleb Banks both rose to the occasion in the Hoosier victory. Reneau went for 15 points, a career-best eight rebounds, and three assists. Banks secured a career-best seven rebounds to go along with five points. Senior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis continued his strong play with 18 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, and two blocks.

The Hoosiers hold an 11-8 edge over the Terrapins in a brief, 19-game series that includes the 2002 NCAA Championship game, a matchup that Maryland won by a score of 64-52 behind 18 points and five steals from tournament Most Outstanding Player Juan Dixon. Indiana swept the season series in the 2021-22 season and have claimed three-straight victories overall against Maryland. On Jan. 29, IU earned the program’s second ever victory in College Park in a 68-55 result. The Hoosiers also earned a 74-64 home win on Feb. 24, 2022. Sixth-year senior forward Race Thompson averaged 18.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in two starts against the Terps last season. He converted 16-of-24 (66.7%) shot attempts.

The Terrapins, led by first-year head coach Kevin Willard, enter the matchup with a 14-7 record and a 5-5 mark in B1G play. Maryland is 11-1 this season when playing at home, including ranked wins over Illinois and Ohio State. The XFINITY Center has been a haven this year during league play with Maryland being the only team in the Big Ten to remain unbeaten in-home conference games (5-0). Maryland has won eight consecutive Big Ten conference games at XFINITY, including all five games this season and the final three of last season. The Terps won a program-record nine consecutive home Big Ten games in 2014-15. Jahmir Young is one of 14 active players in the NCAA to post 1,700 career points, 500 rebounds, and 300 assists. Donta Scott became the 59th player in program history to reach 1,000 points in the win over Miami. He scored 24 points in that game and now has 1,176 career points. He is also the 17th Terp to post 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in a career. Through 115 career games he now has 625 rebounds. When Maryland wins, the Terps are averaging 78.6 points while allowing just 60.4 per game. Maryland is also averaging 17.2 made free throws and hold a +5.3 advantage in rebounds. 

IUWBB’s Mackenize Holmes and Yarden Garzon earn Big Ten Weekly Honors
Senior forward Mackenize Holmes was named the Big Ten Player of the Week while freshman guard Yarden Garzon is the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, announced by the league office on Monday. It marks the second time this season the duo has swept the weekly awards, also earned player and freshman of the week honors on Nov. 28, 2022. Holmes earns her fourth player of the week honor her career, tying for the second-most of any Indiana women’s basketball player in the program’s history Garzon becomes the fifth player in IU history to be named a Big Ten Freshman of the Week on multiple occasions.
 
Holmes averaged 24.0 points, 6.7 rebounds while shooting 70 percent from the floor in three wins for No. 6 Indiana last week also averaged 1.3 blocks and 1.7 assists per game. She started off the week with a double-double, her ninth of the year, at No. 13/16 Michigan where she had 25 points and 10 rebounds. In the victory on Thursday against No. 2/5 Ohio State, Holmes led with a team-high 26 points and chipped in four rebounds, an assist and a block while going 11-for-13 from the floor. The Gorham, Maine native shot 72.7 percent against Rutgers on Sunday where she converted on 8 of 11 shots and added six boards along with three assists, two steals and two blocks.
 
Garzon averaged 14.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.3 steals and shot 56.7 percent from the floor and 55.6 percent from the 3-point line in IU’s three victories. The Ra’anana, Israel native went 4-for-5 from the floor including a 2-for-3 effort beyond the arc at No. 13/16 Michigan as she added five rebounds, a block and a steal. On Thursday against No. 2/5 Ohio State, Garzon had her first career double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds where she hit four 3-pointers and distributed three assists and had three steals. Garzon closed out the week against Rutgers, where she went 5-for-8 from the floor and 4-for-6 from 3-point range to go along with four rebounds and three assists. No. 4 Indiana will face Minnesota on the road on Wednesday night. Tipoff in Williams Arena is set for 8pm.

IUMBB’s Trayce Jackson-Davis and Jalen Hood-Schifino earn weekly Big Ten Honors
Indiana freshman guard Jalen Hood-Schifino was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, while senior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis was voted as the league’s co-player of the week, the league announced on Monday. The awards mark the second for each this season after Hood-Schifino claimed his first-career freshman of the week honor on Jan. 9 and Jackson-Davis was named player of the week on Jan. 23.  

Hood-Schifino averaged 15.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.0 steals on .435/.500/1.000 shooting splits in a pair of Indiana wins over Minnesota (Jan. 25) and Ohio State (Jan. 28). Jackson-Davis posted 21.5 points, 15.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 4.0 blocks in the games against the Gophers and Buckeyes. TJD compiled 25 points, 21 rebounds, and six blocked shots at Minnesota on Jan. 25. The game marked the first 20-20 game from a Hoosier since D.J. White on Jan. 8, 2008. He also became the first high-major player to post a 25-20-5 game since UConn’s Hasheem Thabeet on Feb. 14, 2009. JHS added six points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals at The Barn. Against the Buckeyes, JHS posted a career-best six made 3-pointers and scored a game-high 24 points. He added three assists and two steals in 32 minutes of run. Jackson-Davis posted an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double for the Hoosiers in the victory.

Indiana University Football lands commitment from Anthony Miller for 2023
Indiana has picked up a late addition to its 2023 recruiting class with the commitment of three-star ATH Anthony Miller of Duluth (Ga.) High School. Miller was originally committed to South Florida but re-opened his recruitment in December. He took a visit to Indiana this past weekend. Miller is ranked the No. 95 player in Georgia. Miller is a 6-foot-5 and 225-pound prospect who can play on both sides of the ball. He had 20 receptions for 305 yards and six touchdowns playing tight end this season. In three years, Miller totaled 63 catches for 1,008 yards and 12 touchdowns. Miller becomes the 14th commitment in the class of 2023 and the National Signing period starts Wednesday.

Indiana University Men’s Tennis 2023 recruiting class ranked #14 nationally
The 2023 Indiana Men’s Tennis recruiting class earned significant national recognition Monday morning. The Hoosiers’ incoming class was ranked No. 14 out of all NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis programs by Tennis Recruiting Network. Indiana’s 2023 class features Liam Drover-Mattinen and Facundo Yunis two international players who will begin competing for IU this fall.
 
Drover-Mattinen is a highly accomplished player from Portugal Cove in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The most recent individual rankings have earned him a No. 19 standing from Tennis Recruiting Network and No. 75 on ITF. Yunis joined the Hoosiers for the spring semester but will compete until the fall. He is from Munich, Germany, and is the first German player to represent the Cream and Crimson since the 2009-10 season. He was ranked as the No. 70 player in the ITF’s singles rankings most recently.
 
The combination of Drover-Mattinen and Yunis earned Indiana 235 points on the Tennis Recruiting Network’s class rating system, giving the No. 14 overall recruiting class rank. The Hoosiers had the second-highest rated class of any team in the Big Ten. Ohio State was the only conference opponent that had a higher ranking, as their class was considered No. 10 in the country by TRN.
