The Indianapolis Colts Confirm that General Manager Chris Ballard and Head Coach Shane Steichen will return in 2026  Hours after the Indianapolis Colts’ 2025 season came to an end following a 38-30 loss to the Houston Texans, the team says it won’t be making any changes at coach or general manager.  The Colts that head coach Shane Steichen and general manager Chris Ballard will keep their jobs following the team’s record-setting collapse following an 8-2 start to the season.  The Colts ended the regular season on a seven-game losing streak and ultimately finished the 2025 season with an 8-9 record.  Ballard has been general manager since 2017 when was hired to replace Ryan Grigson. Steichen has been the Colts head coach since 2023 when he was hired away from the Philadelphia Eagles after serving as their offensive coordinator for two seasons.

The Colts have made the postseason just two times during Ballard’s tenure as general manager. Shane Steichen has not made the playoffs in three seasons as Colts head coach. Indianapolis has not won a division title since 2014. The team’s second-half collapse during the 2025 season put them in the record books as the first team since the 1995 Oakland Raiders to start 8-2 and miss the playoffs.  While injuries to quarterback Daniel Jones, defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, cornerbacks Sauce Gardner and Charvarius Ward, and kicker Spencer Shrader did not help, calling 44-year-old potential Hall of Fame quarterback Philip Rivers out of retirement did not help either.  Rivers lost all three of his starts as the Colts quarterback, completing 63% of his passes for 544 total yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions.

While Rivers’ performance was relatively good for someone who had not played NFL football for five seasons, it was not good enough to help the Colts make the playoffs.  The injuries to key players and the team’s switch to a pass-first offense following Rivers’ return also likely derailed what could have been a record-setting year for running back Jonathan Taylor.  Taylor recorded five games with over 100 yards rushing as the team roared to an 8-2 start. However, once the losing streak began after Indy’s Week 12 loss to the Chiefs, Taylor did not see another 100+-yard game. His highest rushing total in the second half of the season came in the team’s Week 15 loss to the Seahawks when he put up 87 yards.

After the Colts were officially eliminated from the playoffs, the team made one more start with Rivers before handing the reigns over to rookie quarterback Riley Leonard for the season finale.  In Leonard’s first career start, he completed 61% of his passes for 270 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Leonard also ran for a score but recorded a costly fumble in the first half.  Overall, Leonard finished 2025 having made five appearances as the Colts backup. Only two of those appearances saw him take meaningful snaps. However, he did finish the season with 415 total passing yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.  With the status of former first-round draft pick Anthony Richardson still up in the air, the Colts head into yet another offseason without making any significant changes to their leadership and uncertainty around the quarterback position.
